Glad to see the overrated Led Zeppelin shit losing

What’s wrong with Marvin Gaye?

yeah the first album I like a lot more and it's also more culturally significant

more culturally significant

Stairway to HEaven is more famous than every MArvin gaye song

To white people maybe.

"Famous" doesn't directly equate to culturally significant. It's that whole Velvet Underground quote thing in action.

What's Goin' On is the better record.

You mean everyone outside the US

Led Zeppelin are also much more influential

Why do you dislike Marvin Gaye so much? Seems weird.

acclaimedmusic:

#5 What's Going On
#33 Led Zeppelin IV

if anything What's Going On not being #1 was a RYM peculiarity

Hunky Dory or even Tapestry maybe in terms of pointing to the 70s.
I suspect an insane number of children were conceived to the latter.

I can't believe this nigga gave his wacko dad a gun as a gift then got shot by said gun. Do you think his last thoughts were "damn I wish I had bought him a NES"?

His skin color

nothing. great singer. but what's going on is not better than led zeppelin IV.

led zeppelin iv is a perfect album

Because Otis Redding is better.

Than Marvin Gaye? Eh... probably a tie. If you said Black Sabbath I'd probably concede the point but Zeppelin did more for prog than the development of metal or rock generally so I couldn't in good conscience call them more influential than Marvin Gaye

nobody fall for this

I'm being serious. I'm not arguing that Led Zeppelin isn't good because I like Zeppelin a lot, but things change when we're talking influence. They're important as far as metal goes because they both popularized the sound as well as pushed it into increasingly ornate directions, but the end result of that influence is progressive rock which has very little influence outside of itself and has mostly died out except for a tiny niche in today's music.

Since Led Zeppelin didn't pioneer metal originally we can't really compare them to Blue Cheer or Deep Purple, which means their next closest peer would be Black Sabbath who pioneered not just metal but are also the common touchpoint of doom, stoner, drone, and arguably sludge metal to this day.

Then we look at Marvin Gaye who's still influencing mainstream music today– SZA, The Weeknd, Frank Ocean, Bruno Mars, Daniel Caesar, and more are directly indebted to his sound while I can't think of any mainstream artists who can directly tie their sound to Led Zeppelin. Or Black Sabbath, actually, but a lot of that has to do with how much more popular rock has been over time compared to R&B until lately.

Based

everyone rates each album against every other one

when will this meme end

SZA, The Weeknd, Frank Ocean, Bruno Mars, Daniel Caesar, and more are directly indebted to his sound

none of these people are remotely indebted to marvin gaye. the weeknd sounds absolutely nothing like whats going on

culturally significant

Maybe in one country. And that's debatable too.

Led Zeppelin IV isn't even as good as I and II

oh god at first i thought this was billboard's year end sales for 71, but it's even worse

contrarianism. contrarianism on both on rym and ITT

Glad to see the overrated Led Zeppelin shit losing

Youre a fucking retard

Not an argument

I > IV > II > III

Playing with your dolls again?

Because Al Green is better.

He did it on purpose, he wanted his dad to shoot him because he couldn't kill himself

Gaye actually deserves the praise unlike Lamar

Yes it is. Led Zeppelin is garbage

I’ve lived long enough for children to grow up and believe liking Marvin Gaye makes you a contrarian

Led zeppelin were thieves they shouldn't be on any top 50 list

ruins a good song with field recording of conversations

A good artist steel and yada yada

Instrumentation-wise no, but I'd say his vocals absolutely do

They improved everything they stole x100. Compare their version of Dazed and Confused to the original by Jake Holmes and tell me all they did was steal.

I mostly listen to old school R&B, but What's Going On is probably the single most overrated album of the 70s. Marvin Gaye is cool, but that record is among his weakest.

Every zoomer knows "Ain't no mountain high enough" but only dad rock freaks know Stairway to Heaven.

My uncle used to give guitar lessons to zoomers and they all wanted to learn Stairway to Heaven.

A Zoomer who even wants to touch an electric guitar is sure a dad rock freak.

Damn I remember when Led Zeppelin IV was in the top 10, now it has fallen to number 71
Who's next has also fallen from top 50 to number 463
