What an apocalyptic nightmare of an album. I don't think I've ever heard music that sounds this creepy and evil before. The sophistication of this depraved atmosphere within the confines of scuffed lo-fi black metal production is hypnotic and harrowing. It reminds me of Paysage D'Hiver's self titled- except, where that album felt like a journey into some cold netherworld, this feels like a breakdown. After a decade of black, death and doom metal obsession, it takes a LOT for music to unnerve me- somehow, this album does it every time. This is the horror seething under the surface of the human heart, writhing in wait to be summoned by some dismal trauma or catastrophic imbalance, overtaking someone once human. This is hysterical, unadulterated, dehumanising mental illness, of an overwhelming potency not even depressive black metal tends to capture. A strong contender for my favourite black metal album of all time, only rivalled by the likes of Weakling. I am consistently astounded by the atrociously ugly urgency coarsing through this abomination.
I doubt another album like this will ever be made. What a gleaming, glorious jewel of purest obsidian.
