I don’t get it. Maybe it’s influential, but to me it’s just kinda boring. Did I get filtered?

i dont really get it either. teenage riot is an awesome song. ive checked out a lot of stuff and its all pretty boring and unimpressive songwriting.

They were mean to Nardwuar

Try smoking weed first

No, easily the most overrated alternative rock band

Nah you are just a chud

Thr Kim Gordon vocals are bad. But the guitar atmosphere is nice

yeah if you listen to sonic youth's discography in order, this album doesn't really stand out
only remarkable thing is that it had a more accessible song (teenage riot)

Only good song is the first one. I think if they stopped trying to sound edgy they might be good.

if they stopped trying to sound edgy

so their career after daydream nation

No. Sonic Youth fucking sucks.

Only redeeming thing about them

Teenage Riot, Silver Rocket, and Total Trash alone are worth the price of admission

I think it's mostly about that rebel artsy-fartsy punkish hipster attitude from it and this dark noisy yet somehow calm trippy shoegazy atmosphere it has
that's at least what makes me really enjoy it
some people don't feel that way about it or dislike those things, and that's fine

they've always frustrated me, they have all the right "sounds" to check my boxes (dark, punky, noisy, dissonant, etc) but the songs just never really hit. or they get a groove going and then lose it or ruin it somehow. a couple decent tunes in their discography but overall yeah, overrated

The band dynamics are really strong on this one. Thurston and Lee play off each other crazy well and Steve's really finding his groove here. I will never understand what people see in Teen Age Riot though, very bland start to an otherwise excellently performed album.

Nah, it does suck
It wasn't even influential, maybe to a bunch of landfill indie bands who are of no consequence themselves.

lol you are just butthurt that you will never do anything important

I could do "important" things if I was a trust fund kid living in NYC. Meaning I could form the right connections and astroturf the rest of the country into thinking my shitty music is worth something. But that wasn't in the cards for me.

I'm sure you made up the difference through hard work and your charismatic personality

lol seethe

Sonic youth rules

it's a good album.

anyone who says Teenage Riot is the best song on DDN is a certified pleb

Teenage riot and a few others are great but in general i'd rather listen to EVOL and Sister, Murray Street is underrated too but its the closest thing they did to classic rock

Total Trash was always my favorite

Came here to post this. I don't normally push the herbal jew but it is necessary to understand this band.

One of the best albums ever.
It reveals itself you slowly, you need to attenuate your ears to it.
Teenage Riot is literally the weakest track.
The Sprawl might be the best.

I went through their discography over a decade ago and while there are several tracks I don't mind revisiting from several albums, the album I enjoyed most by them was Sonic Nurse. Their mixing and mastering is all over the place when going from album to album, so it's also the only album by them I typically ever bother revisiting. I did find it strange that DN was more frequently in Anon Babble charts and recs vs SN. Be sure to turn your volume down if you're going from DN to SN.

Also, revisiting again and even SN is not one I go through without skipping any tracks. -1 Handcream track.

good, consistent rock album
i thought it was boring when i first tried getting into it but it grew on me. still have some dislikes about it, like how flat the production is and how much thurston is really just a mid and bland vocalist but the songwriting is really good

The Sprawl might be the best.

It's Cross the Breeze

THE WORLD IS DULL
BUT NOT TODAY

Sonic Youth is the only good American band to emerge after 1980

It wasn't even influential

It may very well be the most influential underground rock album of all time… if you think Nirvana, Pavement, Unwound et al. exist in the same way without DAYDREAM NATION, you’re just being a wilfully obtuse prevaricating piece of shit.

Get your ass out of your ears.

SN is underappreciated but it's a late era highlight against the critical peak of DN, which happened some 15 years earlier. It's not really that confusing given the difference in cultural impact. But yeah, SN's about as good outside of that context.

Kims vocals are the best part

Daydream Nation is one of those cases where the allmusic recommended album is the worst starting point
you should either start with Goo or Dirty if you want accessible or back to Confusion Is Sex if you want noise, or Murray Street because that's the best one
Daydream Nation is drab and middle of the road

one good song: the album

lol RTX blows SY out the fucking water

youtu.be/SgXCUhpFb74

Maybe their 30th best track and it’s got more energy than entire smashing pumpkins albums

Goo or Dirty

Disgusting. Their worst albums.

Confusion is Sex

This one's based.

Murray Street

This one's never done much for me. Don't know why - A Thousand Leaves, NYC Ghosts, Sonic Nurse, Rather Ripped, all fine. But this one's just okay to me.

It is overall boring, but it's got some interesting sounds :-)
