This album is the Nirvana "Smells like Teen Spirit" of heavy metal. It brought heavy metal to its knees, and castrated it mightily. It is, then, by definition, the most damaging, counterproductive, and overrated LP ever to be released. Even standing it up on its own, and not letting it poison the minds of those that came after it, I wouldn't even put it in the top 10 most influential thrash releases of 1986... it's easily killed by the unholy trinity of Darkness Descends, Reign in Blood, and Pleasure to Kill, which pushed the envelope of metal in three different, related directions. It's not anywhere nearly as enjoyable as expatriate Mustaine's Peace Sells, which was technically brilliant and a whole barrel of fun too, or as dark as Possessed's sophomore effort, or Sepultura and Sodom's full-length debuts. It's not nearly as punk-as-fun as Nuclear Assault's first. Then I could throw in fifteen, if not fifty, other backwash thrash LPs that did nothing for the genre as far as influence goes, but are still a whole fuckload more enjoyable than this one.

are they right?

It's simply more catchy that all its competitors and has better production (original non-remastered version). Once you grow out of thinking "more extreme is better" you'll appreciate it's the best metal album of all time.

Metallica is and always will be the top metal band. They influenced every genre of metal. Here is Dead with a room full of Metallica posters.

Even their later albums are good despite not being as heavy. Load and Reload are slept on.

this guy is one of those "tony martin-era black sabbath is good actually" fags, disregard anything he says

No other metal album covers so many bases and does it so well. Thing that Should Not Be is one of the best doom metal songs, and it's a "filler" track. The songwriting is just superior. Popularity doesn't mean good, but sometimes, it does

You say this but you haven’t actually heard the competitors because you only know metal at a surface level like most Metallica fans

Not as good as ride the lightning or the Black album, not a masterpiece by any means. Still great

This

worst song is....LE BEST!!!!!!!!!!

yawn

Leper Messiah is the worst. But there are no bad songs, and The Thing That Should Not Be is very good.

What's wrong with the remastered version?

Reduced dynamic range, same as most remasters. First CD release is usually the best version of every album.

Metallica was very unusual for the metal scene because they were maybe the only band that knew how to write songs.
Everyone else was just writing zumzumzum riffage, variating the tones a bit up and down to have some semblance of a song.

They still are the best metal band because they dared do things in metal nobody else did, like blending a lot of melodicity without sounding less metal.

If by being the best they killed metal, then it's not their fault. Nobody else could just come close or follow. Genres also get exhausted once they peak and metal peaked with them.

Nah Leper messiah is underrated, the riffing is dinosaur stomping. It's actually Sanitarium

James is the king of riffs.

Thing That Should Not Be is kind of drony and featureless compared to the rest of the album. I've sat through Jerusalem six whole times so I can appreciate drony and featureless

Imagine if Metallica had a better drummer. There is a video of Dave Lombardo filling in (get it) for Lars at some concert and it sounds so fucking tight. Lars can't even play simple fills.

Lars was exactly the right drummer for the band. Metallica needed simple drumming to counterbalance the complex compositions. If they had a "good" drummer the songs would have lost their immediate catchy quality.

whoever says anything like the greentext irl sounds like a self appointed black metal conoisseur who thinks any band that sells more than 50 copies of an album has sold out. Master and Reign are the top of the 80s thrash heap and it's not even close

yeah but find a Metallica fan who doesn't wish it was Lars at the back of the bus, and I'll show you a man with a bridge for sale

I get your point but he fucking sucks live.

It's funny but the exact opposite of this is true. pleasure to kill and darkness descends are indistinguishable from one another and were doing the same tired thrash thing for 4 years at this point. Sodom's debut is a literal slayer clone without good songwriting, sepultura's debut has some slightly different sounds and is more deathy, but is largely uncreative. these are the backwash thrash LPs in question. Peace sells is the only interesting mention. actual cope and seethe from a genre autist who wants every EP to sound exactly the same

Weird way to spell Dave.

sepultura's debut has some slightly different sounds and is more deathy

I've heard Max Cavalera say that the first 3 SEPULTURA albums sound the way the do because the literally didn't know how to properly tune their guitars.

Dave also writes great riffs. Rust In Peace is an amazing album. But Master of Puppets has it all.

Dayum, no wonder he blew his brains out

If someone else released Load and Reload it would be fine but in the context of their earlier catalog they fucking suck. I guess they are not bad in a vacuum.

Garage Inc is unironically the best thing they've recorded in the 90s despite being covers. First half of the Black Album sucks imo.

Not really. Master is great and I love it but comparing the two, Rust is better. Better riffs, more concise songs, bigger variety. Metallica's main problem is that their songs often go a minute or two longer than they should. Still, I love Master. Could play it on guitar front to back (except thing cause I'm too lazy to downtune) but Rust is literally a perfect record.

Well, to each their own. Personally I like the lyrics on Master of Puppets more and I'm not the biggest fan of Dave's singing.

I often skip Lucretia but then I skip stuff on Master of Puppets and Ride the Lightning too

I don't really judge either on the lyrics, it's the music that's more important to me so I can't give input there. I will agree Dave's singing is an acquired taste though. He can sing great but his timbre you either like or don't. Personally I love his voice. Like James' too but Dave's is just more interesting.

Rust has no skips for me. Maybe Dawn Patrol if I don't feel like waiting before playing the next song but the rest is great. Master too (except Thing cause of downtune) got no skips for me. I really enjoy all the songs on it.

Yeah but good lyrics just add that cherry on top that takes the album to another level. I think Master is just the right amount of heavy and Rust kind of sounds a bit lighter than that. Still an amazing album. Would have been interesting if Dave stayed for another 2-3 albums.

ultraboris claims anudda

Oh sure. Personally I wouldn't rate either's lyrics above the other. Metallica is more story vibe like Maiden while Megadeth is more fantasy and politics and both are great in their own way.

Metallica keeping Dave on would have been so good. Take the best of both bands and it'd be epic. Dave wouldn't have been such a diva because he'd never have a chip on his shoulder, Cliff wouldn't have died and it'd be so interesting to hear what they'd cook up together.

Metallica was very unusual for the metal scene because they were maybe the only band that knew how to write songs.

Everyone else was just writing zumzumzum riffage

you mustve really not listened to any metal then

Metallica is more story vibe like Maiden while Megadeth is more fantasy and politics and both are great in their own way.

James's lyrics are about loss, drug addiction and feels more personal - that's why I like it. Also very catchy and it fits well with the songs.

sounds like a libtard tumblrette opinion

This album is the Nirvana "Smells like Teen Spirit" of heavy metal.

So it's good? An uncontested 10/10, only detracted by γ- males that need to feel special?

Metallica is the greatest metal band for two reasons. One, because of how they arranged their songs like dance music. They did this right from the start. Check out Whiplash for a great example. Incredible control over tension and release, setting up the "drops" where you really want to headbang/mosh. And good use of variations so they can have plenty of repetition for hookiness without it getting boring. Compare the arrangements of the various cover versions they did and you'll hear the difference. Metallica's songs could almost be jungle/dnb if you changed the instruments. Their competitors were still thinking in traditional song structures, and those can't give the same kind of visceral energy.

Two, because they seem to be the only thrash band that understood what "thrash" really means, which is staccato playing. You have to keep the strings muted, you have to muffle the drums, you have to keep the sound dry. It needs to be clean too. I'm pretty sure they used noise gates while recording, and actually paid attention to keeping the instruments well separated (excluding their one big production failure which can be excused because of the circumstances). In thrash, every instrument is a percussion instruments. Again, their competitors still seemed to be producing like it's classic rock.

Of course, I'm only talking about their first five albums, but those alone are enough to crown them kings of metal.

In thrash, every instrument is a percussion instruments

I've seen James say that he literally plays his guitar as a percussion, or at least that's how he thinks about the riffs.

Agreed. Their arrangements are 10/10.

Kurt's favorite Metallica song was Whiplash
