well is he wrong? the black album was the first metal I ever even heard but that may have just been because of my age.
when I was growing up all the adults told you metal was bad, and then I heard Enter Sandman and thought it was pretty cool, and started looking back at older stuff starting with and Justice For All then Ride the Lightning, I then got into Megadeth and Slayer.
so for me at least as a kid, the Black Album was my gateway into metal.
but I was like 9.
so it might have just been timing/age for me personally. But I could see it happening for others too, Enter Sandman, and Nothing Else Matters and Unforgiven were easy radio friendly songs that would appeal to people and be an on ramp to thrash metal.
There's also just.. Metallica's cleaner image and aesthetics.
Consider people growing up in mainstream America, probably in Christian households in the 80's and early 90's. You'd have parents who went through Satanic Panic, their kids are not going to get started in Metal with album covers with zombies, skeletons, and demons in hell with a band with a Pentagram as its logo and a band with the word "Death" in it
but Metallica is a pretty neutral name. The cover was just all black with a rattlesnake on it. a rattlesnake is a patriotic American image.
There's nothing satanic about the lyrics you hear on MTV in the videos.. Enter Sandman is clearly about having nightmares.

It's much easier for someone to get into than say Reign in Blood or Hell Awaits.

They had a platinum record two months after release, they were selling out arenas, they were all over MTV, they were at the Grammy's. They were mainstream by the late 80's, there is no two ways around it.

death angel is mid and not even worth bothering with imo. dark angel on the other hand is one of the nastiest fastest thrash bands of the 80s
