Early KISS isn't even that different from early punk. They're both glam influenced and stooges/Detroit influenced and emerged in the same grimy urban 70s rock landscape.

I've always thought The Dead Boys sounded more like early Alice Cooper, than KISS, but, I guess, on some levels, the comparison is apt.
I have seen both KISS and GWAR.
Both put on great shows, but I think GWAR has better music.
I like KISS, but I only gravitate towards the classic line up/albums from 1074-79.

they were the first act in music to prey on edgy white boy sensibilities in the way they did, and unlike other dark bands it wasn't enough that they appealed to teenagers, KISS loved them young: they're like McDonald's, they want you hooked early and their message is as good for impressionable young minds as McDonald's food is for your body
Gene's lyrics are always jewy as fuck, "Rob you of your virgin soul" is disclosure. Alice Cooper and Black Sabbath weren't predatory. You had to leave it to the jews to turn music into a weapon.

Actually KISS fans range from every age, come from all walks of life, and cross over many generations.
You have grandparents who were original soldiers in The KISS Army who make it a family gathering to attend KISS concerts with their children and grandchildren. That alone is a testament to their popularity, legacy, and staying power. Not many bands achieve this. KISS is one of the few bands since the invention of Rock and Roll that have.

When that single came out, KISS fans turned their back on them, and soldiers in The KISS Army went permanent AWOL.
Everything prior to that was pure gold, but I Was Made For Loving You, at the time was considered a "Sell Out" because KISS went DISCO. (They tried to justify it by calling it "KISSCO" that publicity stunt failed!)
It took a long time for KISS fans to forgive them, and for KISS themselves to realize what a huge mistake they made. They haven't performed that song since the 80s, and will probably never perform it ever again.
The BEST KISS songs were the ones they wrote themselves back in the early days when they were just starting out. There's a reason why everything from the first album up to Love Gun are considered "Classics" among die hard KISS fans.

Oh, sure, people in the Black Metal scene apply make up to look like rejects from a KISS audition, I'll give you that, but KISS were basically derivative of early Alice Cooper meets The New York Dolls, and have more in common with those bands than they do with Burzum of Mayhem.
