Eddie Vedder's struggles with stardom have a concreteness missing from more mythic epics of resistance. But it isn't his MTV boycott or TicketMaster stand that make his third album his best--it's his need to live up to Kurt's musical example and expiate Kurt's mythic pain. Three or four of these songs are faster and riffier than anything else in P. Jam's book, token experiments like "Bugs" are genuinely weird, and in an era of compulsory irony his sincerity is something like a relief--a Kurtlike relief at that. A-
Eddie Vedder's struggles with stardom have a concreteness missing from more mythic epics of resistance...
Black is their only great song
You know what? This is a top 50 album.
Imagine being filtered by stupidmop. Delete your computer.
just never read any of Eddie's interviews, ever
Better Man is like American girl tier iconic
Jeremy and Ocean have better performances
I actually prefer any of their first 4 over vitalogy. Vs is my favorite. Also I'll add my dad is such a super pearl jam fan I've heard them an insane amount
Any thoughts on the later stuff? I loved Backspacer. Lightning Bolt was a bore.
So did Eddie hang himself on November 6 and they'll find his decomposed remains in his house shortly?
their newest is surprisingly good
ten and vs were pure kino, everything after that has sucked, but there is absolutrly no argument that vedder, and pj for backing him, are indisputed royalty for taking on mtv and ticketmaster
Unfortunately I kinda lose interest after binaural but I check out each new record when it comes out. Eddie's voice aged and he lost the rebel spirit, the whole band has the healthiest lives of any grunge band and it's reflected in their music. They don't have the struggle to write from anymore
wait until you hear skid rows last dump
Different record but faithful is probably their strongest anthem. The whole we all believe part is one of those rare moments where it feels like the world's all together
No Code to me is their most mature work and sorta like grunge indie rock. Lot of really strong songs on that sometimes, smile, who you are, around the bend.
fuck indie
Dark Matter? I'll take a listen.
vitalogy is literally their 3rd album
oof
yeah.. gigaton (2020) had some good stuff on it too actually it kind of got overlooked due to when it came out (muh pandemic, they couldn't tour, etc)
and I say this as someone who's a "fan" but thought most of the records they did post 2000 were mostly meh (they all have a great track or two or three but overall were kind of forgettable)
You're fucking right!
Vitalogy is the best Pearl Jam album hands down.
I like the shit that came before.
But there are actually some odd time sigs in one of the songs, as well.
5/4.
What I think it basically expresses,
is "this shit has gone on too long and I'm bored as fucking hell!"
I made the mistake of meeting Eddie Vedder once, he's a turbomanlet. I'm not kidding, he's like 5'3" at best. He's smaller than an average woman.
I can't take his music seriously anymore knowing it stems from basic bitch manlet rage.
I'm a yellow bed wetter
Did he ever explain this?
look it up
he's a tiny little runt
kek
I can take a gamble on what it means.
He wet the bed as a kid.
Probably cause Mom didn't show him potty right.
I relate!
the Napoleon of music
Height: 5′ 6½″ (1.69 m)
kek he had to add that extra 0.5" on there
lmao, next time round up
I just assumed they had shooped his legs down in size but nope lol
I'm surprised that Christgau made a fair and non-faggoty review here.
anyway yeah Eddie was just a middle class California surf jock, he's not a romantic or tragic figure like Kurt or Layne
Vitalogy > No Code > Ten > Vs > Yield > Binaural > Riot Act > Backspacer > Self Titled > everything else
This is thr only time the "boo hoo I'm so famous" shit doesn't ruin the record, but the no music videos thing was fucking stupid, and their little war on ticketmqster ended with 7 people dying so Pearl jam aren't exactly heroes.
Ten>>Vs.>>Vitalogyi>No Code>>>Pearl Jam>>>>Binaural>Riot Act
music videos
This isn't kpop, woman.
le music videos are le bad
Ok frank zappa wannabe. This opinion only got you music nerd points 40 years ago.
Vitalogy is great but not as good as Ten or Vs.
music videos are le necessary
You're gay.
This. No Code is wonderful and has some really great songs that are very unPJ-like.
Ten is great, as is VS, but Vitology is so well put together on every level.
They made music videos, just not many, and they performed most of them live, which is way cooler anyway.
Firing Dave abbruzese was the biggest mistake he made
Ticketmaster bad!
Music videos bad!
implying any art is necessary
it's all quite useless
What rage? Vedder makes laid back BDE music, not manlet rage music
Ten is the best album, easily. Vitalogy feels rushed, the song writing is odd and there's more dissonance which doesn't work. Its a troll take to say this is the best. Ten's B-sides and extras are better than all these songs, Betterman is great but it's an early one they were embarassed to put out earlier. The chorus is so gay its insane. Whipping is also ok and Tremor Christ, but the whole thing, no
Yeah but no code isn't really indie rock it's just pearl jam breaking their grunge sound and going in several directions
Look up any photo of him. Dude might be THE shortest major rock star of all time.
Knew someone would say this. My point was it's the bottom of the first four imo, though it has a few bangers but not enough for double LP
He's 5'7. Ngl I thought he was tall dude acts like a tall surfer dude
Vedder is nowhere remotely close to 5'6".
Weird how Cameron achieved this monopoly on grunge drumming
their little war on ticketmqster ended with 7 people dying
wat
I adore better man but I agree otherwise besides that I think VS is for the most part an improvement on Ten. They have the same number of good songs but VS has this rawer quality. Rats, blood, elderly woman, daughter, dissident, glorified G (which always felt new wavy to me)
He's 5'7
That's a bold faced lie.
Look 5'6 here. Cornell is over 6 foot so the difference looks right
He's not even good
Neither is grunge.
definitely never impressed me, he sounds better in Soundgarden or Temple of Dog
I liked some songs off this album back in the 90s when it came out, but I never felt the need to relisten
Now when I think about it, it all sounds like something between a modernised Neil Young and folk rock. Which isn't bad in itself, just saying that in 1994 this didn't feel new, it reinforced the impression grunge was on its way out and they didn't have any idea where to take rock next. So they fell back on doing something like this
good grunge is as good as good classic/hard rock
grunge especially the pearl jam side definitely took a decent bit from Rust Never Sleeps and young in general
