I have the chance to buy a Thorens TD402 DD for about $600, basically new. I’ve never owned a turntable before, is this a good or a shitty purchase? I’ve heard I’d need to replace the cartridge.

Cool story, bro.

direct drive

I had to look it up for the first time but it doesn't seem like a bad deal as hardware. But don't feel like you have to jump on it either. Expect to spend $100 on a decent cartridge.
What are the circumstances for it to be "like new?"

When did this become a special feature and how do we go back?

according to the seller it’s only had an hour of play time, comes in the original box with a copy of the receipt and warranty
Seems a little weird that they’d be wanting to get rid of it so soon after purchasing, I’m waiting to hear back from them on why they’re selling it

audiophiles dont like anything automatic because they think it creates too many vibrations

get into vinyl

apparently need a new tiny piece of plastic with a paperclip sticking out of it

that'll be 10 billion dollars plus tax plus tip thank you very much

meme hobby

thorens makes some of the best lp players
do you have alot of records? do you have good speakers? he basically gave you 100$ off for buying used ive seen this model for 750$. you might also be able to get some sweet black friday deals. its a good deal but it just depends on alot

$600 for any audio component sounds like "audiophile" snakeoil, to me. but it's probably good and well made and will sound exactly like the used technics sl-d2 I got from the thrift store for $80 unless you also have super expensive speakers and amp to play it through, and even then you may not be able to hear any difference.

but if you're a richfag who's going to buy something "high-end" anyway, I don't see why not.

why do you want to get scammed buying audiophile shit duds. this is for rich grandpas and retards. complete waste of money

get a more fucked up one, like full metal with astrolabe gyro arm

Too much vibration before and after playing the record.

Aedophiles need to be stopped.

Fuck that...I don't want to turn on a light every time I flip or stop a record. Fully automatic or nothing. Bought this little gem (not actually a picture of my turn table ) in 81 and it still works great. I did have to replace the rubber feet inserts but got lucky and found a nearly new set of the OEM feet on ebay.

Looked at a few 80s linear tracking turntables recently but the dynamic servo arms apparently start wearing out and are not designed to replace. Too bad, because the aesthetics are sick.

Locally this has been on craigslist for like 6 months. Guy dropped it to 175 down from at least 200. Way overpriced.

go for it

Good 'table. Most Thorens have light tonearms so you'll want a light tracking cartridge, like under 2 grams.

guess I'll use this thread to ask, talking to my dad recently he said he'll leave me his record collection. he said I can do whatever I want with it. I'll probably sell the records I don't care about, how do I properly appraise them?

Melt them down for scrap. Most records are worth nothing but you can go on discogs and see what they're selling for. Keep in mind the price is usually higher there because people are seeking out specific ones.

Input the catalog number into discogs. Different pressings are identified by the matrix data stamped into the inner groove of the vinyl. I hope you're patient. And yeah, most will be worth nothing or not worth the hassle of selling individually.

direct drive is bad now

Kill yourself.

It has always been a gimmick.

I have 1 of these as well I inherited 25 years ago from my ex brother in law. It's fun. i had to replace the tonearm mechanism belt. But overall I enjoy the simplicity of the Pioneer PL-400 more.

look up the ones you think will be worth something and take the rest to a record store
my local record store pays half of what they sell it for

The ones you think are worth money almost never are. There's a sweet spot in obscurity.

No amount of sex would be worth this.

it's always been noisy, go and hang yourself with my Xerxes' drive belt

Looks great. I would be worried about warped records though. How tight is the clampdown?

it does not handle warp vinyl very well. It claps tight enough...but no gravity assist on the stylus.

he got the vertical one

kinda jelly ngl

kys with my expensive audiophile gear

Bateman-esque

Give me one good reason not to buy this.

Every song meets the criteria of excellent performance, perfect recording and flawless mastering. What better way to celebrate such a monumental anniversary for one of the absolute leading brands in analog high fidelity than with this to-die-for LP sampler? Contains most genres of music — blues, jazz, classical, R&B and female vocal. From now on, you'll only need to carry one demo record around with you.

In the 81 when I was working in retail as a sales person for Radio Shack their was a high end audio store called "The Upper Ear". They used ( We also used) Mannheim Steamroller "Fresh Aire III" to demonstarate our highest quality audio equipment. Mostly "Tocccata"

just say you're fucking retarded and poor nigger good things in life cost money FAGGOT

What kind of high end turntables did you sell there?

If you meant "The Upper Ear" they had ungodly stuff in the 1000's of dollar ranges.

ungodly

In a good or bad way? My dad used to shop at Radio Shack all the time but only bought junk.

Radio Shack was not associated with The Upper Ear. "The Upper Ear" sold the highest (presumed) quality most expensive components on the market. The high end stuff that would get reviewed in Stereo Review and High Fidelity magazines. I am mostly referencing price when i mention "ungodly."

For instance. The album i referenced sold for $20.00 in a time when vinyl albums sold for 8 to 10.

I misread you. Thought you meant it was a high end affiliate of Radio Shack lol.

My dad did give me a Shure M3D cartridge from the 70s which became my #1. It mates pretty well with a Technics SL1200 tracking at 4 grams.

very nice.. My PL 400 currently has a Realistic (Rebranded Shure) R1000. I replaced the stylus earlier this year.
