Their songwriting was amazing since the 2nd album onwards. They were heavily influenced by british bands since the beginning and until the end, though. That was for good.
They sounded like Tears for Fears, The Police and The Cure up until Canción animal, which is the first record in which they actually developed their sound towards an unique form of alternative rock influenced by british shoegaze and dream pop bands like Ride. After Canción, they went full on shoegaze in their last 2 records, though Sueño Stereo also showed influence from groups like Smashing Pumpkins.
Just start with Canción animal or Sueño Stereo.
I'm actually of the opinion that they started being really great only since Canción animal onwards. Their earlier works always had some bangers in each record, but also a lot of filler. So yes, I love Soda, but I'm not their biggest fan. I also feel other bands like Los Planetas kinda mogged them at their own game.

Good question, as I have "La Caja Negra", their full discography boxset on vinyl along with two copies of "Comfort y Música Para Volar" and one of "Sep7Imo Dia" (also all vinyl) and can't find any takers
They broke out being typical teeny bop shit but with directly importing British new wave sounds, but then after they made it they made a serious effort at more experimental works with stronger writing and doing that near their top really cemented their status

They do resemble Tears for Fears but Gustavo had an unique voice imo. That's what made the band stand out so much, and the guitar strumming.

A los anglos les gusta las bandas japonesas, alemanas, incluso brasileras. lo que no garpa son las bandas argentinas. otra diferencia es que grupos como Fismans, Os Mutantes o Can tienen fans de todo el mundo a los que genuinamente les gusta la musica. Lo contrario a Soda stere, que los mismos argentinos quieren meterle hasta en la sopa a los gringos/europeos en sitios como RYM o aca mismo en Anon Babble
Creo que la razón es porque no hay un factor de diferencia o novedad en su música respecto a la música que ya conocen. Soda Stereo incorporó lo que ya se venía haciendo y eso no lo hace tan excepcional como un argentino o latinoamericano podría pensar.
Álbumes como "Clube da Esquina" o "Construção" son fascinantes y tienen mejor recepción de la crítica por eso que Soda Stereo no tiene; un elemento de autenticidad que fácilmente podría asociarse a su contexto, a su cultura. Cerati se empeñó en hacer préstamos (y no digo que lo hizo mal, me gustan mucho sus trabajos) del mundo anglo y ahí está la diferencia.
Estas cosas dan la oportunidad de volver a pensar en la música, pero es inútil cuando hay diez mil bandas con el sonido genérico de Mac DeMarco o lo que sea que esté en tendencia.

Con Messi ya no pasa eso (Pasaba, pero ahora no). El problema con Soda Stereo es que los mismo argentinos hacen todo lo posible para que los angloparlantes le den bola. tuvieron exito en sudamerica, pero tampoco la pavada de que todo el mundo los conoce. al argentino le GUSTA que le vaya bien afuera. al punto de tener la percepcion de la realidad alterada.
