What's the greatest rock band of all time? I personally think it comes down between the Rolling Stones and Led Zeppelin, but I think I would ultimately choose the Stones.
What's the greatest rock band of all time...
the stones are the best rock and roll band, if you talk about rock music as a whole then the grateful dead were the greatest
if you talk about rock music as a whole then the grateful dead were the greatest
Thanks for the hearty laugh.
i'm gonna get shit for this but, i think it's the E Street Band
that answer is so terrible that it loops back around to being keyed
it's the Rolling Stones.
they're great, i love them, but they are not greater than the Rolling Stones.
It's objectively Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds
honestly its hard to beat sabbath
Motörhead if we're being serious.
I'd probably give the edge to Zeppelin. They have more cross-generational appeal whereas Stones mostly appealed to boomers. Zeppelin also had more consistency with less filler in their catalog but also had the shorter career so there's that. Led Zeppelin 4 is far better than any single Stones release as well.
Coldplay. The rest are pretenders.
Stones sound boring. Zeppelin doesn’t.
zoomzooms detectedd
the 4 albums in the OP are better than Led Zeppelin 4
Exile on Main St. alone is better than the entire Led Zeppelin discography combined
That album doesn't even have any of their well known songs.
So?
those albums have filler in them wheras LZ4 is non-skippable minus 1 song.
Black Dog
A classic, that one's amazing.
Rock and Roll
Great song.
The Battle of Evermore
One of the worst songs they ever did, I can't stand it.
Stairway to Heaven
It's a classic of course, but it's a little too overplayed for me to want to listen to it very often.
Misty Mountain Hop
Underrated, I love this one.
Four Sticks
It's fine, kinda filler.
Going to California
Not a fan of this one personally. Overrated.
When the Levee Breaks
Great song.
how can it be the best if none of their best songs are on it? What carries it then?
no one said the Beatles or Gaydiohead or Pink Floyd
Anon Babble is healing.
It's Nine Inch Nails
Singles band
Only good when other bands cover them
No
Excellent album and Singles
Great but not the best
Funny
thanks for waiting for me to let me post the correct answer.
it's Metallica.
It's Nine Inch Nails
keeeek are you 14 or something?
Wtf would a 14 year old get out of Nine Inch Nails
They were literally my favorite band from the ages of 12 to 15
nothing which means they're obviously not the greatest rock band of all time
I think "Rock and Roll" has to swing to some extent.
Metallica doesn't swing (which is fine).
They're a great "metal" band (I was never really into them but I can appreciate they evolved that genre)
so for me, its the Stones
most popular songs =/= best songs
the grateful dead
Explain the appeal to me. Everything I've heard from them sounded like some folksy soft rock garbage.
no, but they should be somewhat correlated at least.
Best ever rock band? It's easily the Rolling Stones.
Best American rock band? Probably the Velvet Underground.
Not even close to being the best alt band, let alone the greatest rock band of all time. The best alternative rock band is either Nirvana or R.E.M. I don't care how obvious or cliche of a choice Nirvana is either, they're beloved for a reason.
pink floyd
Nirvana
You can't be called the GOAT when you only released 2 albums (shitty independent albums don't count).
Best alternative rock band's spot is between Royal Trux and Ween. Also, Stone Temple Pilots is better than Nirvana, Hüsker Dü are better than R.E.M.
Lynyrd Skynyrd never gets included in the greatest classic rock bands because 1) They were southern rock and 2) Because they died prematurely. But they are by far the best, most prolific classic guitar rock band of all time. Most people only know Sweet Home Alabama or Free Bird but they have like 10-15 other incredible hit songs like that. Go down the Skynyrd rabbit hole and you will never come out again. They’re simply a level above all the other shit, yes even Zeppelin or Aerosmith, and nobody who has listened to their catalog or knows their story would ever argue against that.
You must be over 18 years old to post on this website
Stone Temple Pilots is better than Nirvana
nope. one band changed the culture, the other followed
Nirvana didn't change culture either, Kurt followed Sonic Youth, Smashing Pumpkins and Mudhoney steps
Rap music and Taylor Swift also changed the culture, doesn’t give them merit if they changed it to something shit like Nirvana did
Hüsker Dü are better than R.E.M.
I enjoy Hüsker Dü but feel like REM's IRS output is borderline untouchable, and after that they still had some pretty high highs.
mogs ANY rem album
Heavy metal can’t ever be the “best” music because it’s about making the guitar “growl” with distortion which will always be less refined and sophisticated than using a guitar for chords, melody and harmony. It’s a completely different universe musically and only a true plebeian wouldn’t understand that
Well you posted my favorite Hüsker Dü album so good on you, I still prefer REM's IRS output over it.
shitty independent albums don't count
Retarded. Bleach is fantastic and obviously counts. Incesticide and MTV Unplugged arguably count too. That gives Nirvana a discography about as large as Jimi Hendrix, and he's obviously one of the all-time greats.
Royal Trux
Trash.
Ween
Reddit-ified Zappa. They suck.
Stone Temple Pilots is better than Nirvana
No, not even close. None of the other grunge bands are even worth mentioning, none of them matter except for Nirvana.
Hüsker Dü are better than R.E.M.
I actually considered mentioning Husker Du as a potential contender for the greatest ever alt rock band, so I'm okay with this opinion.
The Smashing Pumpkins did not influence Nirvana. All three of those bands are also vastly inferior to Nirvana.
I love Skynyrd, but I don't see how they're better than Zeppelin. I'd put them above every hard rock band besides Zeppelin though.
Killing Joke are the greatest Rock Band to ever have existed. Great discography. Great lore. Cool members w/ awesome careers outside of the band. Well known enough but alternative enough to still be cool. And 40 years and not one guitar solo.
And 40 years and not one guitar solo.
solos are based. the only non-onions without solos are the Ramones
There isn't a single alt band that was capable of producing a masterpiece like Gimme Shelter or Kashmir. These bands aren't worth discussing in this thread.
Incesticide and MTV Unplugged arguably count too
B-sides and a cover album absolutely do not count.
You were saying?
youtu.be
the truth this board doesn't wanna hear. no band ever is touching prime e street.
Incesticide is secretly their best album however.
MTV Unplugged isn't a cover album just because it has a couple of covers on it. Unless you want to argue that all of the big 4 Rolling Stones albums are cover albums. Which I admit is kind of based but not really accurate.
there's a Robert Johnson cover on the 2 best Rolling Stones albums
a coincidence? i think not.
it has a few covers and the rest are just acoustic versions of their old songs, so it should count as a whole studio album
Unpopular opinion: Most of the Rolling Stones' cover songs weren't very good (ironically, I'm listening to one of their covers right now though).
How many Zeppelin songs do you actually want to hear though? You have Black Dog, Heartbreaker, When The Levee Breaks, Ramble On, No Quarter, Rock N Roll and maybe something obscure like Flight of Achilles. Other than that, what is there? A bunch of slow, gay ballads or some cringe boppy boomer shit like “Moby Dick”. That’s it.
Holy fucking filtered, they have plenty of great deep cuts. Have you ever heard Ten Years Gone?
Releasing gay shit like “Tangerine” or “D’yer Mak’er” in and of itself writes Zeppelin off as gay and possibly not even a true hard rock band. There was no excuse for that weird, tangy shit to be on their albums. It’s just so corny and “yellow”, like pineapple on pizza. 0 aesthetic sense
Fuck Led Zeppelin.
Now by popular demand! A list of some of the songs Zep stole from other artists:
"Babe I'm Gonna Leave You" - A folk song by Anne Bredon, this was originally credited as "traditional, arranged by Jimmy Page," then "words and music by Jimmy Page," and then, following legal action, "Bredon/Page/Plant."
"Black Mountain Side" - uncredited version of a traditional folk tune previously recorded by Bert Jansch.
"Bring It On Home" - the first section is an uncredited cover of the Willie Dixon tune (as performed by the imposter Sonny Boy Williamson).
"Communication Breakdown" - apparently derived from Eddie Cochran's "Nervous Breakdown."
"Custard Pie" - uncredited cover of Bukka White's "Shake 'Em On Down," with lyrics from Sleepy John Estes's "Drop Down Daddy."
"Dazed And Confused" - uncredited cover of the Jake Holmes song (see The Above Ground Sound Of Jake Holmes).
"Hats Off To (Roy) Harper" - uncredited version of Bukka White's "Shake 'Em On Down."
"How Many More Times" - Part one is an uncredited cover of the Howlin' Wolf song (available on numerous compilations). Part two is an uncredited cover of Albert King's "The Hunter."
"In My Time Of Dying" - uncredited cover of the traditional song (as heard on Bob Dylan's debut).
"The Lemon Song" - uncredited cover of Howlin' Wolf's "Killing Floor" - Wolf's publisher sued Zeppelin in the early 70s and settled out of court.
"Moby Dick" - written and first recorded by Sleepy John Estes under the title "The Girl I Love," and later covered by Bobby Parker.
"Nobody's Fault But Mine" - uncredited cover of the Blind Willie Johnson blues.
"Since I've Been Lovin' You" - lyrics are the same as Moby Grape's "Never," though the music isn't similar.
"Stairway To Heaven" - the main guitar line is apparently from "Taurus" by Spirit.
"White Summer" - uncredited cover of Davey Graham's "She Moved Through The Fair."
"Whole Lotta Love" - lyrics are from the Willie Dixon blues "You Need Love."
I bet it’s an 8 minute slow jam with a lot of low energy points that aren’t essential where the listener can comfortably take a piss break and come back without missing anything
I bet it’s
How about you actually listen to it and then come to an opinion? What the fuck is wrong with you zoomer faggots?
youtube.com
Dazed and confused
Babe Im gonna leave you
Whole lotta love
Immigrant song
Going to California
They probably have more better songs than the Stones without the bloated discography.
He hasn't even heard basic bitch Led Zeppelin tracks
Anon Babble ist tot
the Velvet Underground
I don't get it.
I literally references Flight of Achilles I just don’t think your gay androgynous crotch stuffing British band of faggots is the best thing to ever happen to music
Still hasn't heard basic bitch Led Zeppelin songs
Anon Babble est fini
One of the most embarrassing posts I have ever seen on this board
You haven’t heard any Lynyrd Skynyrd hits other than Sweet Home Alabama or Free Bird, which is the ONLY reason you would be claiming that Zeppelin are “the best” anything. Stop acting like you are an experienced purist when you’re speaking only from inexperience.
I bet
Bruh it's a track you can just look up on youtube and find out
You haven’t even heard Saturday Night Special or Needle and the Spoon by Lynyrd Skynyrd but you think you “really know classic rock” because you listen the most entry level British band you discovered on Guitar Hero at age 14
He STILL hasn't heard basic bitch Led Zeppelin songs
Eso es el fin de Anon Babble
I’ll check it out eventually, I just don’t really care. Ive heard the “best Zeppelin” and it sounds like gay low T shit compared to the Allman Brothers, so I’m just not in a frantic hurry to listen to one of their “passable deep cuts”
By the way I’ve definitely heard the song before I just don’t remember it because it was so forgettable
Nah that post actually contained a lot of truth and it did rock your initial posture of confidence
I've listened to multiple of Lynyrd Skynyrd's albums in full. I also grew up hearing them as I am literally a Southerner myself. I am a big fan of Skynyrd.
However, Led Zeppelin is still a better and more groundbreaking band, I don't know what else to tell you. Why are you sperging so hard about this? You're just making a cool band look bad.
He as of this moment has not heard basic bitch Led Zeppelin songs
Questa è la fine de Anon Babble
Ive heard the “best Zeppelin” and it sounds like gay low T shit compared to the Allman Brothers
this has to be bait
Nico Sperg Guy is that you?
Exile on Main St. doesn't have 1 (one/una/黑鬼) filler song
nico tranny vs skynyrd tranny
Nah his style's similar but he doesn't have the same ticks and his spelling's too correct. Pretty sure he's still banned.
Quick, someone ask this guy about CAN
OH WELL WOULD YOU LOOK AT WHAT WE HAVE HERE? A BORING 8 MINUTE SLOW JAM WITH PLENTY KF DEAD SPOTS; AMPLE OPPORTUNITY FOR A BORED LISTENER RO TAKE A PISS m.youtube.com
And you nerds think your plebeian mop-top British 4 piece band of faggots is better than this? m.youtube.com
You are now feeling a nervous lump in your throat because you’re realising you aren’t “true music fans schooling a Zoomer” you are actually Zack Black style nerdy classic rock faggots who discovered led Zeppelin on a PlayStation music game
Ok you over tipped your hand here, it's too obvious you're baiting now. Well played, you actually got me for a moment.
*Jack Black
“Ok I know you’re trolling now” as a response to something perfectly rational without explaining what about it is “obviously trolling” is the lowest, most common, pathetically desperate tactic seen on internet forums and I’m glad I was able to make you resort to it
That Smell
what exactly was That Smell anyway, they were rather vague about this
There isn't any Husker Du album that's better than Murmur, especially not Warehouse. Not even Zen Arcade can beat Murmur.
I saw REM and Husker on the same bill. I think Mould and Stripe fucked after the show.
What's your opinion of the Rolling Stones? I'm interested in hearing your stance on them.
It was about how the band were getting too wild (drugs, DUI car crash) and “the smell of death was around them”. They died 3 days after it was released
Definitely better than the Beatles if ur comes down to the two. Stones have the badass edge and danger that is essential to rock, Beatles were soft pop for fags
I think "Rock and Roll" has to swing to some extent
this is the exact reason why i've never been able to get into most metal
Stones have the badass edge and danger that is essential to rock
by that criteria the Kinks blow both out of the water, no other british invasion band talked so openly about the subversive and riling cosummation of sexual relations with individuals suffering from opposite-sex syndrome
just regurgitating the same nonsensical talking points.
Aggressive retard hijacks the thread by being the loudest guy in the room
Cringe
badass edge and danger that is essential to rock
this is a fictional concept that has never existed. it's not essential to rock and never has been. "badass edge and danger" whatever that is even supposed to mean, is not a thing you can hear. your preference of the Stones over the Beatles is for non-musical reasons, based purely on the image and appearance of the bands.
and Motorhead blows the Kinks out of the water
This is a Skynyrd thread now, Yankee. Get used to it.
That's just Anon Babble in general
Yes it is. The term “rock and roll” literally comes from the black slang term for fucking. It was supposed to be edgy, rebellious and scandalous. Bands like the Beatles, The Who and Queen are musically great but at the end of the day they are soft, major key pop music for low testosterone fags
I dont love the rolling stones but its definitely the rolling stones
Best American rock band? Probably the Velvet Underground.
Fuck no. That's the Doors obviously.
Motorhead & their fandom only blow one thing and it sure as hell doesn't shoot water
so only Chuck Berry and The Rolling Stones are rock then.
and the Kinks!
youtube.com
Real rockin' stuff, yeah?
countless grannies suffered fatal heart attacks right after listening to such a disregard for convention and sexual edge, unlike every other shitles song that was right up their alley
I dont love the rolling stones
I'm sorry.
