They spend hundreds of thousands, maybe millions on big clunky boxes but their music never sounds like something you couldn't do on a MacBook Air with a cheapshit MIDI controller and a copy of Ableton.
And the music itself is never even good. It's stiff and sterile as fuck. All that expensive equipment for music that sounds like royalty free stock music for YouTube videos. Why?
Why can't gearfags make good music?
personally i don't know what you mean
Because gear doesn't make the music, the abuse you endured as a child and its consequences do.
Making music with hardware is much more about the process than the end result. It's not composition, it's performance.
Making music can with hardware can be like meditating, whereas working in a DAW feels more like doing a puzzle or solving an equation. They both have their merits, but if you're just going by how the mp3 that comes out the end sounds then yeah software is superior. I have way way more fun with hardware though.
the abuse you endured as a child and its consequences do
HAHAHAHAHAAAHAHAHAAHHAHAH
FUCKING LOVE WHEN YOU FAGS ROMANTICIZED ABUSE BECAUSE IT MAKES THE ART """""REAL"""'
not sure what the yellow drum machine on the right is, but everything else I see in this pic bar the mac is cheap as shit.
analog warmth
akai tom cat
please post some great music that non gearfags are making
thanks m8, yeah it's all cheap lmao. should've noticed the timbrewolf phenotype
gearfags cope with their lack of creativity and experimentation. this guy made one of the most unique, novel and innovative electronic albums of the 2000s with fucking soundforge. in this day and age, you really dont need gear at all.
youtube.com
maybe they don't have a musical mindset. maybe they are just knob twiddlers and button pushers until something sounds "good".
i see african americans making music in fruity loops and they just move notes in the piano roll until it sounds acceptable (to them).
a lot of people are just making noise they feel is acceptable.
Yeah this is accurate actually.
"Pleasing to one other person as well as me" is what I aim for.
We make good music but then we ruin it and start over again
mate if you put crap into it crap is going to come out of it just like any other machine
Your case against gear is weak. You say it's not needed to make great music. In that case you don't need a computer either, or an instrument whatsoever. You can make great music just by singing, so why don't you? I guess you're a talentless hack.
Faggots like this, who think that gear has to be expensive to be great are even worse. 10/10 times not a single good sound has come out of people like him.
you can use tools like computers you pedantic tard. the point is that obsessing over "le hecking authentic juno 60 from 1982 that cost me 5000 dollars , bro!!!!!!!!!" is fucking gay. use whatever you want and having a few things, like a midi controller, is fine but tons of fucking gear is unessecarely when you can do everything on a DAW.
Nothing that guitarfags haven't been doing with their phallic fixations and their stupid overpriced pedal boxes. 4/5 men collect gear: tools, guns, cars, clothes, shoes, toys, devices, kitchenware... So synthfags spend thousands to play one note and do filter sweeps, what about it? It's their own damn money and there's absolutely no reason to have a boner on them above any other faggot that buys stupid shit
And here I thought Richard James was a massive gearwhore
If you're musically inclined, you will make music with the most basic software/hardware available. It's just the price tag on the piece of gear doesn't guarantee anything.
all i said was that from experience they suck at making music and dont actually have the soul/heart for it. they just like twisting knobs, obsess over nerdy specs and "dude this was actually used by herbie hancock in 78 and now im using it for my IDM project!!! isnt that awesome????". its just gay, man. nothing wrong with being gay. i see idiots with absolutely no equipment and sometimes even no knowledge on how to even operate a DAW efficiently, yet they produce great shit. its the equivalent to microtonal fags in music theory circles, who just create the most soulless fucking vapid shit
Yeah I agree on that. As you very well said, someone good at music doesn't need much to get going. I've seen people banging hard blowing a fucking tree leaf or hitting buckets with a stick. Yet, 99.9% of us are not like that. For us mortals, there's cope in the form of hardware, VSTs, even music books. My point is that if you got it, gear is not a problem. To me, the exact thing you're complaining about is the purpose of gear and all that shit. It's marketed for those who haven't got it.
OP chose a terrible photo to make the point he's trying to make
Porter Robinson - Nurture
whereas working in a DAW feels more like doing a puzzle or solving an equation
Working with a DAW is like video editing and less like making music traditionally.
From my experience is quite the opposite. Both gearfags and DAW users make derivative music because 99% of shit has already been done, difference is gearfags can enjoy the process while DAW diddlers can't. At least gear collectors sit down, do shit and share it on social media. DAW users just endlessly post on r*ddit about software then try to shill their bandcamp page in hopes of getting two or three people to give them a listen out of pity.
i produced in ableton for 10 years and now i exclusively record analog instruments and analog effects. it's way more fun than making synth patches in a vst
cool, post some of your music since you seem to be so attuned to what is and isnt acceptable then
inb4 cope
Don't care, doing endless filter sweeps on my Minimoog is fun.
dangerously based
This kills the poorfag.jpg
right where it hurts, anon.
I need like $200 more and I can get a used subsequent 37
Honestly man there's no shame in picking up a Behringer Model D, they sound the same to my ear. Hell, I want one so I can have two sequences going at the same time.
go to a performance of a band I enjoy
they're using gear instead of macbooks
OP... no... how could this be?
I mean, even people who haven't been abused LARP as depressed/anxious because it's "cool".
My midi controllers say "Hi". If you spend an afternoon fiddling with things, you can just have a bunch of templates for shit ready to go in your chosen DAW. Ableton is especially good for this with their various "racks". Plus, there are custom scripts available for almost every midi controller available that allow you to transform how they're used in any given application. If you're a multimedia fag like me, you can also re-use your midi controllers for video editing, VJing, drawfagging, 3D modelling, and even assign keyboard shortcuts or mouse actions to them.
Computerfags care the most about efficiency, productivity, and minimalism. They don't want a rat's nest of audio, midi, and power supply cables cluttering their space. People who bitch about "using computers for work" out themselves as buyhard hobbyists, because if your actual job is to be an artist, you're going to want a setup that is easy to maintain, reconfigure, upgrade, etc. over the long-term.
Maintenance for synths is a pain in the ass compared to maintaining a computer system, because they're not modular (unless they're eurorack.) and you need specialized components for a lot of them...well, I guess you could probably fix some of the new Korgs if you know your way around embedded boards but that's besides the point.
using scripts to make audio is fucking retarded. people who actually make music do it by feeling and once you add in all that mental bullshit you are basically just sucking your own dick
can't tell if retarded, or if this is low-effort bait. You use scripts to customize the way your controllers interact with your software. You don't use scripts to make music itself, you utter moron.
he's a guitar player be patient with him
yea doing all that bullshit is retarded. you make music by playing an instrument. what you're describing is something totally different and it's very gay
midi controllers are instruments & your dad is gay. I fucked his ass last night and gave him the biggest prostate orgasm he's ever had in his life.
i don't have a dad and music is not made by mentally planning how to compose it's done by feeling and the further away you get from that the worse your music gets
That clocks. You write like someone raised by a single mother.
i raised myself retard
so ur homeless street trash congrats
i don't have a dad
Must be one of those test tube babies
Tempting, but I still wanna hold out. A wise man once told me if you're serious about [instrument], don't buy a cheap one, because you'll just end up replacing it eventually.
no i have a nice home full of analog gear
pic related it's what i amp my synths through
no actually i am self-generated by my own will
This is my table these are some of my songs. I've only been doing this 2 years. Am I going to be a late blooming star? Does age factor into success? Because I started at 26 does that mean I'm just going to make bullshit music forever as a hobby? Probably

edgelord faggot
thats a respectable little starter setup, the only people that seethe over hardware are third worlders
organize your wires though plz, you'll feel better
All of the sounds are from me on my piano. No VSTs all analog 0 actually mixing. I record straight into my 404 then play my pads while I record in ableton. I think all of these maybe took 45 minutes each. I need to put more effort into my songs
Do you have any suggestions? All my cords are super long cause you need long cords but they get in the way.
you could either coil up all the space and ziptie it together or better yet drill a couple holes in your desk and lead them through the holes and tape all the slack you know you don't need to the bottom side of your desk
it's los angeles so it might as well be mexico but regardless suck my dick faggot
