Think of how discerning your own tastes were when you were old enough to be in KISS's target audience. This is the audience for whom JRPGs and CW TV shows have their plots written for. The same audience Will Smith chased twenty years later.

That's a strong phrase. I'm sure many guys liked them when they were in gradeschool and still enjoy some, or even all, of their '70s output. But they've been embarrassing sellouts for longer than most people have been alive. Even if you genuinely still like their music, why would you want to emulate a group more reminiscent of Spinal Tap than even Spinal Tap?
Early 80's was an awkward time period as bands adjusted to MTV. The song is great on its own.
