I used to go to a lot of shows but haven't in a few years because there's just no interesting bands I want to see.
I liked seeing bands like Swans and Sunn O))) live because it's a very physical experience that blows away just listening to their albums.
I saw Slowdive live once and it felt like a listening party. So boring.

I don't drink or do drugs and I enjoy myself at shows. I have been to both totally sauced crowds (FIDLAR) and ones that were all ages/no drink served (The Mystery Lights for god knows what reason) and both had lively crowds.

I hate Tardstool Sports but to their credit, they put on an event in my city with a free rock concert and we just walked in like we owned the place. The Barstool crowd was full of the most retarded frat trash you would ever want to meet (and they barely responded to the band, but soi'd out over the athletes and podcasters MCing them) but nothing bad happened and everyone just left.

At this moment in culture electronic dance oriented shows, whether DJ or live shows, are just a superior experience, and that is where the experience you're looking for is. There are a bunch of reasons for this.

During the height of rock you had a whole culture around what a rock show was and how it was to be enjoyed, and the mystique of rock was still intact so it was probably truly magical. A good band / rock show requires a certain gravitas/mystique/godlike-quality to be projected from the performer, and believed by the audience, to really work. This isn't happening anymore for several reasons:

1. We are now so used to listening to immaculately produced recorded music, that level of clarity and sonic beauty is just "normal" for us now. Band / rock shows sound like absolute shit more than 90% of the time because live sound is just difficult, bands don't know what they're doing, sound guys don't know what they're doing, and even if they all did know what they were doing it's just hard.

2. Punk and grunge and indie killed the mystique of the band so we just see bands as regular shlubs just like us. Listening to a bunch of regular shlubs just like you sounding like dogshit is just not enjoyable.

3. Bands and especially rock bands have totally fallen behind on visual impact. When you've been to pop and electronic shows with some ridiculous 1000 square meter LED matrix and lasers and a millions of dollars worth of lighting, which most concert goers will have done at least a couple times by this point, a rock shows is just not impressive.

All together what do you have - regular shlubs sounding like shit, boringly standing on a black stage wearing all black and wondering why only ugly smelly dudes come to the show. Electronic shows absolutely destroy band / rock shows in all three dimensions so badly it's absurd. This is why band/rock acts who have gotten big enough have basically pivoted to being a pseudo-edm show (see Coldplay and other ultra sellout world famous rock-ish bands). Not saying electronic music is superior, but it's just clear as day why band / rock shows are being absolutely beat to piss and there's no magic there anymore and hence no hot women and therefore no magic feedback energy loop.

The electronic music culture also wins on these points - everyone does drugs or at least it's understood that anyone around you is likely on drugs so it has that Dionysian libertine feeling in the crowd. And phones are very frowned upon on dance floors if not outright banned. No one can control phones at a massive festival show so that sucks, but a smaller electronic show will usually ban phones from the dance floor explicitly.

I can only speak for hardcore shows since that's all I go to but the younger crowd still gets wild and there's plenty of energy. main difference to years ago is kids are a bit softer now and I don't see all-out brawls and people beefing with each other from show to show like I did growing up

If it's the rock show I would say yes you're absolutely correct, that's exactly the bearded loser you see crossing his arms standing around awkwardly at a smelly rock show. Electronic crowd is way better, way more of a mix of ages, way more women, people having fun with their fashion and getting a bit loose with drugs and the anonymity of the whole thing.
