Your last.fm listening charts are highly encouraged!

Feel free to drop any recommendations below, no matter the subgenre. I am in the process of compiling a large list of albums and artists, which will then be formatted into updated recommendation charts, so your contributions will be very appreciated.

What have y'all been spinning lately?

TRYIN LIKE THE DEVIL TO FIND THE LORD

I really wanna make some more charts but at the same time it's so time consuming and I'm not sure which subgenre I should tackle next

How about essential country rock

Byrds

Flying Burrito Brothers

NRPS

First National Band

etc

Good call! I'll start working on it, not sure if I'll finish it today but we'll see. Any more recs for it? I lost the list of recs I'd been working on from this thread, so I'll probably go back through the archives of these threads and look, but I'm open to more suggestions.

I AM NOW THE ONE SHE LEFT! A HAUNTED TALE FOR SOMEONE ELSE! A LITTLE BIT ABOUT HERSERLF! WHEREVER SHE IS SLEEPIN!

Damn that song got me through a bad breakup

She's married now and I still can't get over her but that song got me through the initial shock

New chart just dropped. This one is Essential Country Rock. Thanks to for the suggestions and some recs.

Any thoughts on this? Any changes you would suggest?

Breddy gud so far. I have some suggestions:

The Dillards - Wheatstraw Suite

Poco - Picking Up the Pieces

Eagles - Desperado

Blue Ridge Rangers S/T

Pure Prairie League - Bustin' Out

If I think of more I'll let you know

Anything you think should be replaced?

I thought it was FJM

jj cale

hell yeah i love him!

don't save her, she don't wanna be saved

Commander Cody Lost Planet Airmen

Great Speckled Bird

Swampwater

Rick Nelson Stone Canyon Band

Nashville West

That's listening to new albums in general for me. One of these days I should really taper my stimulation.

I am not fond of Bayou Country (Except Proud Mary)

Go out innawoods for a few days with no devices

I feel like pic related would be a good intro to the insurgent/alt country movement. Also,

Switch reunions for some old isbell/400 unit. Here we rest comes to mind. Its just better.

I think Old 97's are worth including here (modern). Been listening to them a lot.

Car wheels is for sure essential. If you are looking to expand the modern section, consider Neko Case-Furnace Room Lullaby.

Any good southern gothic music?

LINDA RONSTADT MY QUEEN
For suggestions though, I'm surprised whiskey myers didn't make it on here, but I'm also not too experienced with country rock, and probably mix country pop with rock in my mind

Tattoos fucks me up like nothing else. Knowing you're a faded memory on someone else and embracing that the best thing to be is forgotten just hits like a train. Purgatory really is just one of the best albums of all time. Chartanon please make sure it gets into one

Country music in general has a lot of love for the morbid and sad, this one youtu.be/cJZ_ViDADOE?si=3LDiTvBNXHEK_LaT is an oldie but a personal favorite that my mom always loved, its about the desensitization of tragedy in a small working class town. For some modern bands that generally have a more morbid fixation

Lemme know if these are the sound you're after. Gothic could mean a lot so if you don't like this sound, there's definitely a lot of others to recommend

As a Kentuckian I am very biased towards Kentucky artists, so I plan on creating an "Essential Kentucky" chart with Tyler, Sturgill, Stapleton, Cole Chaney, MMJ, Billy Strings (not very true Kentucky BUT he did live in Morehead, KY for a few years during childhood so fuck it he's an honorary Kentuckian), and then some older legends like Loretta, Keith Whitley, the Judds, Billy Ray, Jean Ritchie, etc.

I'm also open to any suggestions for other chart ideas as well. Country music has always been irrelevant on Anon Babble, but I want us all to change that and help legitimize the genre to all these wpop zoomers.

Oh those are some banger names. I haven't heard anyone else talk about Cole Chaney but he's really good, I wish he'd make more music. Unfortunately I'm not from Kentucky, I'm a Shenandoah valley native so my knowledge on the natives probably isn't gonna be as expansive as yours, but one of my favorites, Ian Noe, is a Kentuckian. I appreciate you putting in the work to make these threads even when they get archived from the 5th Chappel Roan hate thread.

Right on my Appalatchun brother. I don't have many better things to do with my time at this current point in my life. I lost interest in /cmg/ and music in general for a little bit, but I'm back and I plan on seriously making an attempt to keep an active /cmg/ thread up at all times.

I've even got this shit in my Obsidian bullet journal lmfao.

Anyway, glad you enjoy the threads. They are always pretty comfy compared to some of the other threads on here.

Oh and I forgot to say - I haven't gotten deep into Noe's discography, but his song Appalachia Haze was one of my most-listened songs a couple of years ago. That is a seriously wicked awesome song and I need to go deeper into his work.

Yeah the ambiance is a lot better in here. I've lurked Anon Babble a lot and replying whenever I see country discourse but it gets drowned out pretty quick, and a lot of people have a bad perception of the genre ever since the dark ages of bro country 9/11 sent us into. Noe is great, Methhead and Burning Down The Prairie are my favorites by him because of how well his voice does that sort of eerie, almost foreboding kind of narrative. If you know anyone else who sounds like Cole Chaney, I'd love the recs. I'm a big fan of his style, not sure what you'd call the subgenre he fits into

There's another dude from the same area as Cole, Tyler, (and me), his name is Jayce Turley and his band is Cardinal Point. He's real young, but he's got a lot of potential. He doesn't really sound like Cole much, but he's from an area that has produced some amazing artists, so I'd recommend him.

Also, check out Charlie Woods & Deep Hollow. He's also from the area and he is super fucking underrated (and pretty unknown in general).

I really like Charlie Woods’ sound, amazing recommendation. I’m gonna have to go through his stuff. And holy fuck Ghost Of Your Goodbye by Jayce is so good, that absolutely scratches the itch that Cole Chaney left

bump

all the best country scenes aren't in Nashville

Nashville still controls the prevailing country sound

Nashville fucking sucks

This genre is pathetic

Personally I avoid repeating artists on charts like this, so maybe think about removing one of the Gram Parsons albums. I think Willie & the Poor Boys would be a better display of CCR's country rock side than Bayou Country, same for Linda Rondstadt's 1972 S/T over Heart Like a Wheel.

The fascinating thing about country is how much the mainstream industry is still beholden to ancient music business norms. With a few exceptions, Nashville is still run exactly like it was ~70 years ago when labels and studios first came flocking there. It's still an assembly line of session men churning out made-to-order hits, it's still a tyranny of major labels carefully curating the sound and image of their talent, and it's still dependent on the corporate radio ecosystem to promote its music. Maybe that's it's own expression of country tradition in a weird perverse way.

Then why is all the music just shitty pop songs with a country twang and maybe a slide guitar

Anybody know any other good storytelling albums like these?

chart.png - 520x260, 147.53K

Willie Nelson - Red Headed Stranger
Terry Allen - Juarez

Pretty sure he just finished telling you. Only the most generically appealing and least threatening artists get to play. Only the artists that people hear get to be popular. Politics and music; pick your nepo baby

Thanks, friend
