Right-wing pundits have spent nearly a month being mad about the Against Me! founder’s new song

Earlier this month, the trans punk rocker and Against Me! founder performed at one of Bernie Sanders’ rallies, including her new song “Your God (God’s Dick).” With intentionally provocative lyrics, the song takes profane aim at the hypocrisy of anti-LGBTQ+ Christian conservatives, who refuse to respect trans people’s personhood all while applying gender individualism to an ostensibly formless, all-encompassing God. Needless to say, the right-wing internet melted down about her performance immediately.
Music video director-turned-right-wing activist Robby Starbuck shared a video of her performance on X. “This is who the Democrats are now. Pure evil,” Stark wrote. “Other lyrics are somehow even more grotesque and anti-Christian. These people are insane. @BernieSanders is a lunatic and anti-Christian.”
Anti-LGBTQ+ activist Chaya Raichik, who created the Libs of TikTok account, also posted about Grace on X, misgendering her multiple times. “Bernie Sanders THANKED transgender singer Laura Jane Grace for [her] music after [she] performed a degenerate, disgusting, anti-Christian song about ‘Gods big fat d***,’” she wrote. “Any comment @BernieSanders?”
Comedian-turned-conspiracist Russell Brand, who has been accused of sexual assault multiple times, called Grace’s song “blasphemy.” (Brand has denied all allegations made against him.) But it was right-wing podcaster Tim Pool who seemed the most hung up on Grace’s rally performance. Rolling Stone reported that Pool devoted an entire podcast episode to Grace in which he reportedly deadnamed the musician.
“I believe Laura Jane Grace largely weaponized being trans for money, and this is coming from somebody who was deeply influenced and was a fan before… the transition,” Pool said during the podcast.

During her recent interview with Rolling Stone, Grace showed a screenshot from an alleged message that Pool sent her in 2016, roughly the same time that she released her memoir Tranny: Confessions Of Punk Rock’s Most Infamous Anarchist Sellout (Grace came out as transgender in 2012).
“Your music was a huge influence on me in my skateboarding anarcho youth phase,” Pool allegedly wrote. “I used to cover Against Me! busking in the Chicago subway. I’d love to help in any way! Stoked to read your book.”
“I’m not being profane to be profane,” Grace told the outlet. “[...] I’m asking a genuine question. If you refer to your God as ‘He’ and ‘Him,’ but you will not refer to a transgender person with the pronouns that are theirs… that’s just insane. It’s such blatant hypocrisy. You can’t prove God exists with biology or chromosomes. So if you’re gonna throw science continually in my face, let’s stick to that: Your God doesn’t exist.”
Grace responded to right-wing backlash against her performance in a Bluesky post, writing, “Some right wing news outlet caught wind of me performing Gods Dick at the Bernie rally and they are currently going ballistic in the comments on my Insta. They say I’m a demon. Is it true? Is it a chromosome thing?”
She addressed Pool’s podcast episode about her in a separate post, writing, “Got a genuine laugh watching the podcast episode Tim Pool recorded dedicated to me. Terrible person. Genuinely do not know how they sleep at night but it was a good laugh.”
Grace told Rolling Stone that she only learned about the backlash to her performance after Sanders’ team called to check on her since they had been receiving right-wing threats following the rally.
