Alright, gentlemen. Which Symphony represents this tragedy the most?

I'm surprised someone like Steven Reich hasn't taken clips of audiences coughing from classical gigs and looped them over and over

While I'm not a huge fan of Colin Davis' recordings of Elgar's symphonies (I do return to them from time-to-time to see if my opinion changes because a fair amount of people do like them, and I'm generally a fan of Colin Davis' conducting), this one is a winner, one of the better performances of the Violin Concerto I've heard.

J: [Are the characters in your work Licht] "merely some figures out of a common cultural history", [or do they make] "material appearances"?

S: "I pray daily to [archangel] Michael, but not to Lucifer. I have renounced him. But he is very much present, like in New York recently."

J: How do you view the attack in connection with the harmony of humanity represented in [your work] Hymnen?

S: "Well, what happened there is, of course—now all of you must adjust your brains—the biggest work of art there has ever been. The fact that spirits achieve with one act something which we in music could never dream of, that people practise ten years madly, fanatically for a concert. And then die. [Hesitantly.] And that is the greatest work of art that exists for the whole Cosmos. Just imagine what happened there. There are people who are so concentrated on this single performance, and then five thousand people are driven to Resurrection. In one moment. I couldn't do that. Compared to that, we are nothing, as composers. [...] It is a crime, you know of course, because the people did not agree to it. They did not come to the "concert". That is obvious. And nobody had told them: "You could be killed in the process."

Shortly after, Stockhausen commented on the controversy around these comments:

At the press conference in Hamburg, I was asked if Michael, Eve and Lucifer were historical figures of the past and I answered that they exist now, for example Lucifer in New York. In my work, I have defined Lucifer as the cosmic spirit of rebellion, of anarchy. He uses his high degree of intelligence to destroy creation. He does not know love. After further questions about the events in America, I said that such a plan appeared to be Lucifer's greatest work of art. Of course I used the designation "work of art" to mean the work of destruction personified in Lucifer. In the context of my other comments this was unequivocal.

t.cubeless sister, educated stupid

Funny as a cancer diagnosis

Is this thread for anything relating to classical/orchestral instruments or specifically to the classical period of music, ie excluding other orchestral styles?

I played cello in an orchestra from 6th grade all through highschool and in college a bit but had to stop for a few reasons. I don't play as much as I wish I did. Hardly at all. But I miss it. God I miss it. Hoping someone else out there knows what I'm talking about.

I had my simultaneous-four-day cubes taken from me when I was very young. Please be more respectful.

yeah it's pretty funny

classical period of music, ie excluding other orchestral styles

what the FUCK are you talking about

All classical music , Western or Easterrn, World music anything

what the FUCK are you talking about

You know, the classical era, the baroque era, romantic era, etc?

World music anything

kill yourself
you're equating instruments and ensembles with periods. Get your shit to make sense

Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.

some people think "classical" means "orchestral" and those who do know that most people probably don't realize theirs a difference. I just didn't know if this thread is making the assumption that people don't know that or if any discussion of stuff outside of the classical era will be met with tremendous butthurt.

TLDR can you just tell me what the thread means by "classical" specifically?

Also I thought /mus/ would be a slow board but dang this is remarkably alive.

It means:

some people think "classical" means "orchestral"

Some people eat shit for fun and profit.

can you just tell me what the thread means by "classical" specifically?

Fucking embarrassing. Just READ THE FUCKING OP

TLDR can you just tell me what the thread means by "classical" specifically?

it means dignity, honor, justice

what the thread means by "classical" specifically?

Music as such. Music for its own sake.

It's all abour roman ship formations and patrician ruling families

we're talking about a tradition of art music that gets published and distributed via sheet music for musicians to perform.

This general is dedicated exclusively to the discussion, promotion, and celebration of Christian Petzold (1677-1733) and his works.
youtube.com/watch?v=jsgq9Jj_B04

so, like, guitar tabs? is nirvana classical?

no because that's rock/pop, not art music

all music is art and beethoven is pretty popular

all music is art

lol

Sure, but 'art music' specifically denotes a genre, same as 'pop'

what's so funny about art, pleb

"Pop" is not a genre, and the term "art music" is retarded. The correct terminology is academic music, and it's not a genre. It's a tradition embracing many genres. Opera is a genre. Symphony is a genre. Get your shit straight if you're gonna try to "correct" plebs/waste your time with trolls

TLDR can you just tell me what the thread means by "classical" specifically?

youtu.be/BIvWjI4PrJw

Also, Nirvana's music wasn't first published as sheet music.

Most compositions were premièred or performed privately before being published as scores. Hell, some scores were published decades if not centuries after the piece had already gained reputation

pls no bully

It's called tough love, and you're gonna learn today.

tough love isn't a thing

Not published before performance, but published as sheet music before being published in a different form, ie a rock album.

Serious reply. I underatand you're either mentally handicapped, and it's very disturbing to all of us that you are causing a ruckus, or you're underage in which case you should not be on this website.

some people think "classical" means "orchestral"

No. Literally no one thinks this. No one who listens to the music that is. Classical does not mean orchestral.

classical era

what the thread means by "classical" specifically?

Classical music is not just Classical era. Despite sharing its name, the two are different concepts. The word "classical" originates from the latin word "classicus", which initially referred to the highest class of Roman citizens. This evolved to mean "superior" or "of high quality" and later, in the context of music, it came to describe music that embodies the ideals of ancient Greek and Roman art and architecture. To not get into deep philosophy for which you lack the necessary IQ, classical era was just a period in western classical music, and classical music, a.k.a. art music is what is considered as the most sophisticated, advanced and complex form of music characterized mostly by classical forms. Not sheet music as suggests. A pop musician can publish score before an album but it won't make it art music.
Beethoven is not popular music. And not all music is art music.

Exactlty-if it's been recorded, even once, it's not classical

Not sheet music as (You) suggests. A pop musician can publish score before an album but it won't make it art music.

That's why I listed both requirements! ie art music that gets published as an album but not sheet music for other musicians to perform is NOT classical

Do you not know what "before" means?

retarded

Clearly you have no knowledge of Wagner. Even people who criticise his Gesamtkunstwerk for being an ill-defined mushy merging of the different arts still agree that you cannot appreciate his use of the arts completely on their own. If you can't accept Wagner's melodies stand on their own, far less than any traditional opera melodies then you are merely being dogmatic. Your understanding of Wagner shows a dilettantish reading of both his Ring as well as the original Germanic sources which is typical of those first approaching it. You know nothing of how Wagner actually adapted those stories and poetry, or that almost all visual portrayals of Wotan today come from Wagner's Ring. But this negative opinion probably comes from a superficial reading of Nietzsche. As someone who approached Wagner from the Norse sources I can tell you your opinion is wrong. It's the result of, partially, listening to horribly wrong and mediocre interpretations, and on the other hand not investigating the Ring as a self-contained 19th century artwork. No one criticises Goethe for introducing his own themes into the Faust legend. If you were as knowledgeable on the sources as I am, then you would know the subtlety with which Wagner created the Ring, from the very smallest elements of the sources he took inspiration. I'm sorry anon but you don't know the first thing about Icelandic poetry, and certainly couldn't compare with Wagner. Really the problem here is that you just know nothing about Wagner's Ring. Der Ring des Nibelungen is a major work of 19th century German literature, influencing both the language and plot of Nietzsche Zarathustra's, but is also an adaptation of Germanic myths and like for most of Wagner's late works opens up a very informative dialogue between the original and his own dramatic adaptation. Icelandic poetry was one of the most fundamental influences on Wagner's Ring and I doubt you have the knowledge of it to talk about how Wagner created his Ring.

Video not available for me, weird. It ended up suggesting another recording which is, however; as always, it is a very charming piece.

It has all the hallmarks of an unconsummated orbiter/muse relationship, so no, I do not believe so. This only strengthened Brahms' creative power.

Will Wagnersisters admit that Rossini was a better melodist when it comes to Opera?

just realized for all of the Bruckner 8s I've heard, I've somehow skipped over Bohm's, and from what I've read it's supposed to be one of the greats? Let's find out!

youtube.com/watch?v=-pvcpPbmyvw&list=OLAK5uy_lkTC4Z-K4wDjksCymK7R7NyTCUSBSuMXY&index=1

Interesting runtimes. The first two movements have the length you'd see in a somewhat brisk tempo performance (under 15 min), yet the closing two movements are of the opposite (just short of 28 min on the 3rd and 23 min on the finale). Backwards of the solid Jansons 8th I posted yesterday lol. Anyway, should be good!

I hope they did, at least once

At most he jack-o-lanterned into her undergarments.

Tchaikovsky was a better opera melodist than Wagner
Are you one of those repressed freaks that believe that not wanking gives you superpowers

No. Clara was much older as I recall. It was a creepy relationship, or maybe their words expressed friendship and nothing beyond that and we're unable to comprehend that in the current era.

It 100% has an effect on one's hormones, which in turn influences everything else from energy to anxiety to confidence and inhibitions to focus to desire and more. Now, whether or not these changes are positive, much less positive for creative tasks varies from person to person. So, to answer your question, I'm on the edge (pun intended) :)

Also, wasn't there a quote involving Beethoven that used to get posted around here? Maybe I'm thinking of a writer and Anon Babble or a different composer. Just tried to find it but couldn't. Hmm.

Clara was much older

1) 14 years older.
2) So?

unable to comprehend that in the current era

3) Get off it

It 100% has an effect on one's hormones

Yeah, a momentary, inconsequential effect. You know what has a much more impactful, long-lasting effect? Being sexually repressed.

Yeah, a momentary, inconsequential effect.

Nah, I get really, really bad constant anxiety if I go more than a couple days, for example. Not anxiety *about* sex, but general anxiety, and often the only way to get rid of it is to have sex or jack it. In any case, it's real, but again, whether it's positive or negative, substantial or marginal, worthwhile or pointless, varies from person to person.

Sounds like a "you" problem

14 years isn't a little difference, especially when the female is older (I know biology is morally unacceptable nowdays but that's just the reality).

Get off it

?

Bruckner's 8th is very similar to Mahler's 9th in that musicians always bring their A-game when performing it, it's difficult to find a recording that isn't at least well-played, and almost as difficult to find one not at least pretty good. The 7th is somewhat similar, except it's not so much everyone brings their A-game, but that the first two movements are such beautiful works of music, it's impossible to sound otherwise from gorgeous and enchanting.

NTA but being preoccupied with sexual repression to this extent comes off no less neurotic than people who obsess about semen retention.

Alright, tween

Literally what do you think "varies from person to person" means, kek

That's nice, honey

During what was probably the first meeting of Brahms and Richard Wagner in January 1863, Brahms performed his Handel Variations. Despite the great differences between the two men in musical style and an underlying tension based on musical politics—Brahms championing a more conservative approach to music while Wagner, along with Franz Liszt, called for "the music of the future" with new forms and new tonalities—Wagner complimented the work graciously, if not wholeheartedly, saying, "One sees what still may be done in the old forms when someone comes along who knows how to use them"

O_O
