/gg/ Guitar and Bass player General

Thank you Jake. I will learn every chord here

Why do you always sound like you're underwater
And why does this board seem to think you're good? You're awful.
I suspect you just samefag compliments to yourself, because that's the schizo shit tripfags do.

one chord on every page

woah

See what I mean bros?

This post was me btw (by the way)

you wouldnt believe how easy it is to carry

Nobody is persecuting you. I shouldn't have said you suck, as I have no inkling as to how long you've been playing. I was wrong to be harsh.
Please download the Dolby recording app onto your phone though, you wouldn't believe how much better it'll make your recordings.

All I care about is gear acquisition

based

So I guess your words have no meaning? Why should I listen to anything you say? Nobody is genuine, just like David Foster Wallace illuminated in Infinite Jest.

So I guess your words have no meaning?

No insult holds real meaning, which is why I apologized.
And no skin off my back dude I don't work for Dolby or anything, I just thought it might help.

I own one for acoustic stuff but I always just end up transposing the key. If I played with a singer it'd be a different story though.

There's no we and no fight, I've been away for a long time and made some assumptions maybe I shouldn't have made, and apologized.

I'd report in but I can't find the tool I use to punctuate my sentences
sorry

What if his nickname was Guitar but he played Drums? lol how funny would that be?!

He's a multi instrumentalist. If you watch the video he plays keyboard also.

Just got this EB capo. It barely fits on fatter necks like my Epiphone Crestwood but it’s reversible and makes much better contact than they Kysers I typically use.

metal guitar is played using picks

metal guitar solos are played as fast as possible

fingerstyle has higher maximum speed than flatpicking because you can pluck with more than one finger at a time

finger picks exist

So why do metal guitarists use conventional picks?

Picks are louder. Hybrid picking is the happy medium

Picks are louder.

Conventional picks louder than fingerpicks? And loudness doesn't matter with electric guitar because you can turn it up as loud as you want, it's just the sound of the note attack that matters. And it's all distorted anyway so subtle changes won't be noticed. You can hear pick vs. fingers but pick vs. fingerpick?

so true king

He won

i downloaded it, eq'd it, limited it, exported it, re-uploaded it.
now we can understand you.

metal guitar solos are played as fast as possible

this is just incorrect.

I'm going to check out a baritone guitar in a store either this afternoon, if I can make it, or tomorrow.

Actually economy picking is considered the fastest.

still shaking off the rust

It's not as fast as some of the things flamenco guitar players can do.

That's absolutely not accurate. I know it's counter-intuitive, but fingerstyle and picking use different muscle groups. For the most part, flatpicking and especially economy picking is faster, except for a few exceptions here and there.

You know, you don’t have to pick every note

fretting hand kinda cold and stiff

fap

warmed up and ready to go

Anyone else do this?

Yes. I also dip the tips of my fingers into chalk or ash to make them dryer and feel more glide-y

Dude you're just wrong, maybe actually research instead of going by your dunning-kruger.

you should really watch maestro yepes.

doubles down

I hate this general

fingerpicking is faster if you are playing more than one string in random order but alternate picking is faster as far as beating the fuck out of one string goes and you can always sweep if you are playing adjacent strings quickly.
you can hammer on or pull off with either technique but picks are louder than flesh or nails (makes it easier) and it is always slower to play with fingerpicks, even if they are just as loud or louder than a flat pick.
for normal guitar solo arpeggios a flat pick also lets you pick slide or use pinch harmonics which are common in metal and it is very easy to slip the pick into the crook of a finger to tap anyways.

classical guitar is optimized for playing with your fingers and the fastest a single string will be repeated is in recuerdos de la alhambra. it's just tremolo picking. metal guitar solos are much more complex, no one wants to be autistic about their nail care in the metal scene, and there is no one that can play with finger picks very fast.

deprives himself of maestro yepes because of an odd argument

i can't tell if you are joking but i have thought about this many times
doesn't this destroy your strings?

there are legends / rumours about SRV and Gary Moore. that they superglued their fingertips at some point

Nothing a wipedown after you're done wont fix.

Has anyone used Paul Gilbert's lessons? I hear he's a great teacher

What is the key to playing fast

IMG_3746.jpg - 1528x856, 742.07K

I think even Buckethead was his student once upon a time.

The key of Lamborghini

plug guitar into a 20 year old amp with a 20 year old cable for the first time in 20 years

doesn't work

don't know which is broken

probably all three

Change the cable

i already have hard callouses and i imagine they did too. does it make less string noise to superglue them?
yeah but you can never wipe a wound string fully clean. i just imagine them sounding dull after only a couple of days

yeah but you can never wipe a wound string fully clean. i just imagine them sounding dull after only a couple of days

I'm loving this dude's channel lately. One of the best for tech related stuff.

youtube.com/watch?v=2zz3N9ow1VE

the cable. put a multimeter on the contacts and bend the plugs a bit
play clean and very slowly ramp up the speed
it will take months and years but if you don't start playing clean you will be too sloppy to play fast down the line

they probably played so hard they ripped their callouses off or something
imagine playing hard all day and then having a gig in the evening
its probbaly something they had to do out of necessity
both of them were known for playing hard, heavy strings, high action, huge bends, wide vibrato

It's a combination of several things. Using proper alternate picking wrist mechanics, lack of tension, accuracy, reducing your picking motion to the smallest movement possible and most importantly, daily practice, preferably with a proper routine but learning songs that are hard for you and getting them up to speed is almost as valid.

Also, here's another. Unrelated and about frets, but blew my mind. I'm all paranoid about fret wear now.

youtube.com/watch?v=vAA_2k5J8LA

well i watched the first one and was disgusted
then i looked at the frets on my guitars and that shit is worn out. didn't know until five minutes ago
i change my strings up to twice a month, i think i need to start religiously cleaning them
i have a grimy beater guitar at work but whenever i play it i have coal dust or grime on my hands, i don't even want to know how bad the frets are
good channel rec, i'll be watching more

That is such bullshit and outdated advice. Nobody builds speed like that anymore lol

D minor.

yeah now they “build” speed by playing at half tempo and speeding it up after the fact

Very good!

Only Les Paul (the man) and Vinnie Vincent did that
Yngwie plays for real

it's way i learned ten years ago and it worked pretty well for a lot of people
i'm curious what the new breakthrough is after a couple hundred years of guitar players and whether youtube shills have anything to do with it

what does yngwie have to do with anything
he even says the same shit in his instructionals about starting slow and building up

I got the squire 6 soooo much more comfortable than the fender. i can actually play a chord on it without feeling my fingers cramping. Only 325 and I'll return the fender tomorrow.

gg nerds are now more concerned about germies and fret wear on their guitar than making sick riffs

Based amp collector

cool bass vi
i play on a 22 inch superstrat and full scale bass sometimes with no problems, literally just a skill issue

Bass VI

Tune low string and then pick it on 12 fret, is it intonated?

this is why I buy daddiaro XS, so I never need to clean my guitar (maximize funk)

Cleaning up sloppy technique is easier than starting over from scratch because you learning incorrect technique. It's physically impossible to play fast if you use incorrect technique, so logically it makes sense to play fast from the start. Only exception is if you're learning everything with a good teacher.

They picked the lowest IQ genre for a reason.

That's what I did, I play boss pedal models through their recommended solid state amp. I still regularly think about tubes, their glowing filaments, warm soft clipping distortion, asymmetric unmatched bias, and voltage sag under load.

I've always been interested the guitar as machine. I only play what I play. I don't get any better at it. But don't get worse either.

I need a good high gain pedal.

the guitar as machine

Why no piano, it's much more machinery. It has a BUTTON for every note. To play it, your only job is to press a button like Homer Simpson, the machinery, mechanical or electrical, does the rest.

Metal zone

I would like it too if I could play it better.
Being a Piano Tuner might be a good gig, now that you mention it.

be a professional home visit guitar tuner

It wasn't possible to speed up recordings in Les Paul's day. He was legit.

How high did he tune to get that squirrel tone?

impossible to speed up reel to reel tape recordings

????

NTA but you could speed it up, it's literally just pushing the tape through at a higher rate of speed than it was recorded at, but its obvious as hell in both the movements and the pitch of the music.
But yes Les Paul was legit, so was his wife, she was actually an even better player according to many.

still luv me fano

I'm gonna be the Davis of guitar tuners.

ancient 15in speaker in my boogie crackling and crying for mercy when pushed even moderately

i think i mightve blowded the speaker up

No, you just invented rock & roll

lmao

it doesnt sound like rock and roll it sounds weird, considerably worse with effects like static

how it started

how its going

That's your fault. Tone is in the player.

all larp

more like

If its a paper cone you can fix it with tissue paper and glue.

Oh and also, tell me if the cone is pushed to full when its on but without a guitar signal.

ive been meaning to replace it for a while now
i mean it sounds ok dry but if you run effects or get the gain up (which is impossible not to do as this amp is basically impossible to get cleen) it gets all muddy and crackly

It could be a rip, it could also be a bad cable or input jack on your guitar. make sure to isolate the actual source of the problem by testing with a different guitar and cable.
if it's a speaker tear, the tissue trick I mention will get you by for awhile while you wait to replace it.
If the cone pushes out to full without a guitar plugged in, though, its a shot in the amp.

*short

whats the difference between
Squier Sonic Precision California BL
and
Squier Affinity P Bass MN PJ BK
?
is it just that the first one has a slimmer neck? i have long fingers and prefer 7 strings on normal guitars because its more comfortable, i guess i should go for the thicker neck one?

(obviously ignoring the extra pickup, duh)

They are the same picture

all guitars and different cables same issue
sounds fine clean, gain cranked if i lay into it crackles and stuff a bit, and with effects it just completely gives up and crackles and gets muddy quite a bit
speaker is immobile when switched on w/ no signal
i initially thought it may be the effects loop as the only reason boogie went from mark iib (what i got except mine has the iic+ gain mod) to iic is to tweak the effects loop, but it also does it moderately but not as much when no effects are engaged and the gain is cranked
its also new i think as i dont remember it doing this before

Does it do the same with the effects in front of the amp instead of in the loop? Try each pedal in front of the amp separately so there's no chance of signal weirdness.
Also, you only have modulation and delay/reverb in the loop, right?

Why do my up-strums always sound so violent and messy compared to my down-strums?

You should start posting videos of you playing

Technique issue, practice raking up and down, almost sweeping, until your upstroke and downstroke are even.

or something like that, i dunno what the fuck the previous owner had done to this thing but it has way too much gain to be stock
maybe i should ask him because now im confused as to whether its even a iib or iic+ i remember him talking about getting it sent to mesa in the 80s but ive slept since then and the guy who just fixed the footswitch jack didnt say anything

signal path is
guitar—>tuner—->drive—->amp——>fx send—->delay—-reverb——>fx return

If you're intentionally stacking the drive pedal and the amp distortion, cool. But if you're using the pedal and then the clean channel on the amp, you don't need to use the FX loop at all.
That's not the issue here though. Is it the same if you DI into the amp with nothing else in the chain?

thisAlso make sure your hand is moving over each string with equal distance. In other words, you might be strumming 'into' the high side or the bass side rather than evenly over all the strings.

literally just a skill issue

yeah once i picked up the bass vi i pretty much knew i found what i needed in order to learn guitar. couldnt even play a D chord on the fender but i was able to on the VI. going into guitar with a bit of bass experience kinda helps so im glad i started with the easier instrument first.

is it intonated?

I believe it is. using my tuner now and im either kinda flat or kinda sharp on the 12th even when im green when doing open string. im afraid of using a screwdriver and messing it up. ill play it safe and ask the shop to look at it tomorrow

Got to try one of these at a guitar store; unfortunately I want one. They feel fucking awesome. Anyone else played one of these little mutants yet?

You know what, I was going to suggest that to you but forgot to.

Haven't touched one. They don't seem like they could be that loud on their own, but better for plugging in.

Im just glad I found one in my area. All the ones on reverb and online were going to be extra for shipping. The guy knocked off 75 dollars and threw in a bag w strings. Pretty good deal overall. If the innotation wasn't going on I'd be playing it. But I dont trust myself to not mess it up so I'll have them do it tomorrow.

I'd only consider the American ones the overseas are limited.

Luckily no one wants them and they are cheap on reverb

They definitely don't produce as much sound as a traditional acoustic sound hole, but they're louder than you think they'd be.

I played the cheapy standard series, and I thought it was punching way above its price. I'm curious how the American series feels.

You're undeveloped. Play more ska.

Phil “the phantom of fallujah “ mcknight said it best on his poddy

the only people ive ever heard of saying they like the acoustisonics got them for free

currently out and about, will continue troubleshooting later
i appreciate the help anon

I believe it is.

Very nice, I fought with mine a lot (it was flat at the limit of adjustment)

Now you guys got me GASing for a bass vi

“the phantom of fallujah “

Was he the resident butt rapist?

i appreciate the help anon

No problem

is this a common issue with guitars? i saw online its common with the bass VI but for guitars in general, do you guys normally worry about this kinda thing often? does it happen because of use over time or is it just being unlucky?

unknown.png - 238x525, 67.15K

The American ones are like 500 used on reverb so prices kinda negligible if you don't mind used.

The standard has limited sounds if memory serves and probably lower quality build and component

I got some gas for ya

gg hates Mexicans but has gas 24*7

Huh

No, but apparently it's common with squier bass sixes (vintera has a wider bridge)

sounds like shit acoustic

sounds like shit amplified

erm yeah no

Jack white likes the real fender ones, I played a cheapo 600$ one and I was surprised at the acoustic quality but it's still poop.
It's mainly made to be played plugged and using on the onboard acoustic modeling. There is a neck pickup but everyone says the pickups on either model sucks.

have wanted a jaguar for a while

want to check one out in person first

always has been zero within a 3 hour drive for the last like 5 years

suddenly today a nash jg63 came up for sale locally for $1500

nash is basically just a builder of partscasters

but it uses a stupid roller bridge instead of a regular jag bridge or a common fix like a mustang bridge or mastery bridge

im buying a used guitar as my first guitar and i have the sense of rhytm of a drowned dog

what do i need other than a guitar, a p10 cable and a pc guitar link

when i trade my fender back in tomorrow im thinking of using part of the money for a BOSS GX-100 or maybe getting 2 pedals to start my board. do any of you guys use multi effect pedals? i dont think i ever see them posted here. but i also see that people say BOSS has the best pedals.

ive had the fender tonemaster one and the neural one
regular stomp boxes and a real amp clears them both easily, even in a hybrid setup where the multi is just doing FX in a real amp they just sound like DAW plugins

Hey I'm Hard Rock Joe and I just wanna say some positive vibes in here tonight I love it. Rock on dudes!

There's really nothing going for this general, is there? It's a swirling shitfest of dunning-kruger ignorance and outright jealousy. Anybody with any talent takes one look in here, realizes this community is unsupportive, and leaves.
All that's left are schizo's using Anon Babble anonymity to pretend they have skill.

Guitar is not a real instrument and if you disagree you're a troon

haha yeah you should leave now. oh wait you don't have talent.

Are you that guy who used to sit around posting nonsense vocaroos so that the whole general stopped clicking on them for awhile?
Why is everyone a dick on here

Have you been on the other guitar forums?

Go to reddit and check out r/guitar or r/guitarcirclejerk -- it's just dudes asking what do you think I play based on this picture, what guitar should I buy, what guitar should I buy next, reposts of some dweebs Instagram junk, beato posts, and other similar crap.

This place sucks but Jesus if the alternatives don't make me want to unplug my router and toss it out the window

There are actual forums on the internet devoted to guitar. I used to frequent one where they would do daily backing track challenges and r8 each other and give constructive criticism. Of course there were dicks, but by and large, it was an actual community.
This was only 5 years ago, I'm sure they're still out there. Probably loads of them.

liar

There's really nothing going for this general, is there?

No because guitar is not a real instrument

what do you mean nonsense vocaroo thats a perfectly cromulent vocaroo for /gg/ at least its not an AI generated podcast.

I bet Glenn Fricker could make this sound good.

o...k..?

The podcast was pretty good though. Serious deep dive.

Sounds like us but swap beato with trogly

Funny you say that I recorded it on a Harley Benton lol

tfw trogly is yapping in the background

hey! stop that

I don't like metal but Glenn is just too funny! A good deal of what he says can apply to any genre too.

go to reddit

You might as well tell me to bathe in dog shit and brush my teeth with cigarette ashes.

I'll get out my interface and get my sound system config'd for Reaper tomorrow and record some stuff. I wasn't trying to say I was better than anyone, I'm just excited that I'm improving again for the first time in 20 years.

This isnt me
im having a hard time posting here because iPhone is very janky when posting on Anon Babble so i have to use a separate device to post here
give me a moment i will try and cook something up i cant sleep anyway

I like when he reads dumb viewer comments and just straight up dunks on em.

you seeing this?

im seein this.

u cant not be seeing this

Fellas how do I git gud at fingerstyle?

oh gah good luck with it dude
've been playing for 2 years and a half but still cant play fingerstyle

practice with a routine that breaks each motion down into basic movements that can easily be chained together.

my personal routine was start with the thumb until the bass line movement is like breathing, you should be able to keep the bass and rhythm while having a conversation, while taking a drink, while watching a show etc before trying to add any other fingers

Paul Davids has a travis picking video that takes a single basic line and keeps adding complexity as you get more and more comfortable. In a day you'll be fingerpicking, albeit maybe a little slowly, but with a good idea of how to apply it elsewhere.
I fucking hare the guy but that video was great.

no he doesn't

Are you here just to fuck with people? kill yourself, a new players questions outweigh your need to shitpost

kinda shit but the bones of the melody and basic riff are nice
