totally wrong. Pixies played much simpler than Nirvana, who deserve all their fame for adding Mudhoney, Wipers and Melvins to their sound. I don't understand what people mean when they claim Nirvana are a basic band. They have an autonomous sound and are much more recognizable than all the formulaic 80s alternative bands, which played mostly just reverb jangle pop and ooga booga hardcore punk.

OP is right. Even though Nirvana is one of the most popular rock bands ever, it's still correct to classify it as "underrated" because it is THE best band ever. It should be above bands like the Beatles, Metallica, the Rolling Stones and others both in success and recognition but it isn't.

Kurt was an absolute genius, he didn't know jack shit about musical theory and still managed to only ever create good songs. Even his guitar feedback noises were perfect. He was a Midas, there isn't anyone like him.

Kurt Cobain was the greatest artist ever. Everything about his life was the purest form of art, he sacrificed his life for the sake of art, he screwed up his throat singing the masterpieces he wrote, he dared to mix the most pop and polished sounds with the deepest, roughest and most avant-garde ones. He just didn't give a shit about trying to be this or that, it was just the purest essence of his genius artistic personality coming out.

The Fall (one of the most stylzied rock bands ever really) and and (IRS era) REM are IMO, Husker Du has like 5 songs I love but otherwise no, and Burma definitely not

How? They are considered the band that invented the 90s. Documentaries have been made about Nevermind's impact to American pop culture. But Pearl Jam's Ten was a much bigger record. So if anything, based only on results before martyrdom, Nirvana is objectively overrated.
It's like Biggie and Pac. At the time of death, they were just House of Blues level artists. Yeah, they moved records but they didn't become arena or stadium big. But they are considered the GOATs even though Drake made way more money than they did. P Diddy made more money off of Biggie's name than Biggie did.
