lmao I just noticed the Magma wiki link
still a good start though

Analysis
I'd say pink floyd is a great entry point for mass appeal. It's where I started. They aren't the best example of the genre but they're just a great band and a lot of their best stuff is prog rock. If you just want to jump into something with all the trappings, you might go for thick as a brick by Jethro Tull. It's a satirization of the genre, but it is also one of the prime examples of it.
Listen to both Fragile and Close to the Edge by Yes is my recommendation if you like classical.
There are other roundabout ways though (ie: some people probably get into Opeth or Dream Theater and then circle back around to classic prog)
Nothing original about my recommendations, but I'll also throw in First Utterance by Comus for being a weird crazy prog folk trip similar to a bad acid trip.
Pink Floyd as another anon said is the best mass appeal entry point and if you do go for them you can probably go for Wish You Were Here for a more uplifting sound or Animals for a darker sound, the latter of which I think is PF's best work
Genesis beginning with Land of Confusion
There are other roundabout ways though
Mike Oldfield's Ommadawn is quite accessible and is similar to New Age music but done through a prog lens.
Harmonium's Les cinq saisons is one of the best prog folk albums.
Also listen to Opus 5's Contre-courant which is like Harmonium but symphonic prog.
Holy shit BEAT moggs Absent Lovers, Frejus and Great Deceiver.
they didn't even play Discipline when I saw them. but I must admit that their Elephant Talk was better than any live KC version I've herad
They've never played Discipline.
i used to shit on crimson all the time, but i've listened to red a couple times now and i think it's a fantastic album
rest of their discography still sucks though
rest of their discography still sucks though
try listening to it a couple more times
Red is their only good album.
Red is their only red album.
What do you think about Koenjihyakkei? I'm gonna be on their gig this monday
Red isn't even that different from the other 2 Wetton era albums, also listen to their live albums like The Great Deceiver and Night Watch.
they're great, think i prefer them to Ruins.
People compare it to the other Wetton era albums, but I think it's clearly much more brute-force heavy and bordering on metal in quite a few places.
I'd still recommend you check out this song from one of their much later albums. Not much to do with the Red sound, but it's got this same dark foreboding atmosphere draping it especially in the outro solo

Red is the worst Wetton era album
Red isn't even the best red album of theirs.
have you listened to their new live album? it was just released yesterday.
I'm looking for prog that sounds like this. Any recommendations?

Honestly they should’ve called themselves Discipline as an homage to Fripp’s original intention for KC lineup.
red is the worst album of their first 9
GET IN HERE ITS HAPPENING
Koenjihyakkei is the only other zeuhl band that comes close to Magma in terms of quality but they're held back by the fact that Yoshida can't do slow, spiritual, tender moments to save his life. Everything's at breakneck speed with him which works for individual songs, but brings entire albums as a cohesive whole down.
I used to be like you, I only liked the Greg Lake albums at first. But then my taste changed and now I like all KC albums.
I would like to hear them playing Larks 2, since it was also part of their 80s repertoire
I think Red is great
This is a great live album for those who want to listen to KC live with Muir
Too bad it misses half Larks 2 and 21st CB
This is also pretty good
It even has Fallen Angel
i like Mainz 1974
Same
Bill was on fire that night
It also has the best version of Dr Diamond (IMO)
mfw Mahavishnu Orchestra deserved this many live recordings of their performance as well but we barely got one good video performance with gimped audio and like one bootleg in Wild Strings
Fucking shame, imo they're absolutely two sides of the same coin during the Red era
You're on stage 2 of a corruption fetish image
VROOOM VROOOM is basically Red (song)
I went to see Crimson two years ago, and I was actually surprised at how conventional they were. Because compared to when I was in the band, the mid-seventies, the band was much more outrageous. They played it very very safe. It was almost like a Yes or Genesis show, you know, which ironically is what Robert Fripp has been trying to get away from. I mean, the reason why he broke up King Crimson in 1974 was because he didn't want it to turn into a Yes or Genesis, cause it was about to get that popular. And now I go and see them, and what they're doing is really just a kind of pastiche of what we did twenty years ago.
Everything sounds like 'son of "Red"'... through a phaser, or a flanger. And their last title track, "Thrak", just sounds like "Red" with the whole thing put through a flanger. I'm not putting that down, cause Robert is a very good friend of mine, it's just an observation that I had that it just seemed really safe, you know.
Acknowledge Kansas
Really enlightening and sophisticated discussions here clapclapclap
Why is everyone in this band so mean to each other?
