Where to get started with death metal? I listened to a few metalcore, deathcore, and melodic death metal bands and now am trying to get into the real thing. Starting with old school death metal and slowly working my way through different bands.

if you're starting with that, you need to listen to Dark Recollections

Try picrel next
Morbid Angel - Altars of Madness

This but Covenant

obituary, self titled

Hard disagree, don't start with Morbid Angel, OP, even a lot of metalheads find them boring as shit. Also ignore anyone telling you to listen to Deicide or Cannibal Corpse at first. Listen to Death - Leprosy, Carcass - Necroticism / Descanting something, and also Pestilence - Consuming Impulse and see how you like those and work your way from there.

tomb of the mutilated
deicide s/t

Also ignore anyone telling you to listen to Deicide or Cannibal Corpse

Why? Those are perfect entry level death metal bands.

just listen to osdm, it's pretty straightforward and easy to get into
couldn't find and osdm chart but this one mostly has classics

rolling for fun

roll

Stick to melodeath and deathcore, most OSDM is overrated and boring as fuck.

OP, i listened to a few cannibal corpse songs and they weren't bad, they seem a little too middle of the road. Morbid angel was kind of like heavier thrash, I liked it. I want to get into something heavier, work my way back, see where some of the core and melodeath bands got their sound from. Also more music to enjoy and broaden my tastes.

i listened to a few cannibal corpse songs

Listen to this one youtube.com/watch?v=4H7hqQeI5ME

I want to get into something heavier

Listen to suffocation - Effigy of the Forgotten

Incantation Onward to Golgotha

If you like modern deathcore and metalcore you'll probably get into modern death metal bands a lot easier than the old stuff

For me it's shit like Archspire, The Zenith Passage, Black Crown Initiate, Alluvial, shit "true" dm-heads hate because they say it's too tied to the polished metalcore/deathcore aesthetic which is why I like it lol

Bolt thrower and Dismember are what got me into it but that was pretty much just because of the Warhammer cover art

Good rec. I keep seeing suffocation as being legit death metal. Is immolation also in the same vein? Never heard of them, will check them out.I'm kind of into the old school wave of deathcore, haven't really listened to anything new aside from lorna shore and kind of don't really like it. Fleshgod apocalypse and rings of saturn aren't my thing, I prefer all shall perish, a bit of thy art is murder, suicide silence, chelsea grin, job for a cowboy, stuff from early to mid 00s. If it relies heavily on double bass or is over produced, it takes away from the music for me.

Possessed - Seven Churches
Death - Scream Blood Gore, Leprosy
Autopsy - Severed Survival, Mental Funeral
Deicide - S/T, Legion
Bolt Thrower - Realm of Chaos
Morbid Angel - Altars of Madness
Obituary - Cause of Death
Pestilence - Consuming Impulse

suffocation is brutal death music
immolation is more like incantation

brutal death METAL i meant

I prefer all shall perish, a bit of thy art is murder, suicide silence, chelsea grin, job for a cowboy, stuff from early to mid 00

you should enjoy malevolent creation
try The Ten Commandments, Retribution or The Will to Kill.

brollin out of sheer awe

Some really bad opinions itt. Like real bad.
