I think recording as a whole has been bad for music. Although I'm obviously guilty myself. Imagine how much more people would appreciate songs if the only chance they got to hear them was live. It'd be like kids back in the day excited to see the circus come to town. It also separates the real talent from people who can't put on a good show.
I've been thinking about this after seeing old bands doing classic setlists. They still have something special about them. Even songs that weren't the greatest sound better live. Even better if said musician has a bombastic stage act, like a Rob Zombie. People are really into it far more than just spinning an album.
