music production thread

what does throwing shaperbox like this on the master actually do?

just adds a little bit of warmth haha ;)

warmth

sub harmonics

how about you simply but the delay on zero and pitch the dealy 12 octaves down, use the feedback to dile in the amount of added harmonics.

Classic grooveboxes are the next Juno 106's. Just so you know.

Lazy op. Thread already ruined

so clearly a joke

what a fucking baby jfc
post the sticky shit if you want

Don’t ever make a prod thread again. This thread will be full of the schizo talking shit and shills spamming their links because you suck at doing the simple task of copy and paste

cant hear shit

maybe turn up your speakers kek

nah, mix louder.

It's just a shitty wip with zero mixing or mastering anon, why are you even in this thread

because you suck at doing the simple task of copy and paste

yes it’s the OP pasta that keeps the shitposters in line

Jesus Christ dude get a grip, this is the smallest fucking thing to throw a tantrum over on the whole fucking site

You don't at least normalize master before you start mixing? NGMI

How do I normalize master

turn it up

warmth? at 25khz??

why is this general so fucking retarded do I really need to Reddit every fucking post with an /s instead of a stupid emoticon every time Jesus fucking christ

Not them but the semblance of a proper general attracts proper people.
A general that looks like it was made by retards will feel welcoming to retards and will look unappealing to anyone who doesn't want to spend time in a "short bus" version of a once normal general. This has been observed time and time again in many threads over the years.
Furthermore, en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Broken_windows_theory
The fact that you don't seem to grasp the significance of the difference doing things properly makes, as well as not instinctively wanting to do things well like any non-retard would, means that you're most likely one of the undesirables yourself.
Pic related. You need to fucking die you dumb cockroach. The least you could do is apologize and admit that you did something in a shitty way just because you were too lazy to spend one minute doing it the proper way. Arguing back is cockroach behavior and needs to be dealt with the same way we deal with real life cockroaches.

Fucking BASED

I would agree with you if the whole website wasn’t already shattered grinder up glass dust gathered up in the cracks in old ass pavement already

I am the highest quality poster here actually and even I will tell you that this is a shitposting general

Has anyone achieved anything with ringmod? im obsessed with the idea that if i just try enough frequency ratios ill eventually get something amazing but its mostly just atonal bell noises that worked

I can try it out as fx tomorrow on my synth bullshit in here

Yeah I use ring mods in pretty much every project and everybody always says they sound amazing

Nice samefag attempt. Don’t ever make a prod thread again

You're right, but copypasting an OP takes such little effort that it makes no sense not to do it, ad if it can make the slightest bit of difference and attract one additional worthwile post/poster (which in some cases can make or break a thread), then it's already worth it.
And this difference compounds over time, so a period where the thread is consistently well made will, over the course of a few weeks, become noticeably less trash as the good users start wanting to spend more time in it.

kill yourself

Schizo

And this difference compounds over time

that's honestly not something i'd considered before. point taken.

ring mod
vocaroo.com/1ozgZGbWxClS

means nothing
actually it's not staying on there but it does sound a way

God bless you, anon.

if the whole website wasn’t already

...says the red0rt spacer. Go the fuck back.

i've been posting like that since before anybody even cared about being "reddit" suck my gock

Sounds cool but my plan is to create a melodic synth using ringmod, similar to a drawbar organ or something where you can alter the harmonics
as you play

so clearly a joke

they try to sell their product, of course they going to call it some awesome new technic but in reality, you can make any modulation you want already with your daw.
You just have to know how to do it.

huh, that’s a pretty cool idea.
usually I only use it on bass or single effects for practical reasons.
it would be pretty simple to rig up in snapheap but there’s no way that shit would actually track without those stupid release sounds ruining it

Called it. This is why you put in the minimum effort OP

you’re the only person shitting up the thread now give it a rest

You ever play around with real-time control of FM synths? Very dynamic sounds are possible.

what's the deal with juno 106? i haven't really looked into the juno series. they seem commonly available but the price is jacked up to $2k+ in some cases. i haven't seen them mentioned organically in a general music context.

mega cringe

my virus sounds louder without even trying, it's part of basic production skills to achieve loudness without unpleasant distortion

not reposting the whole drop because why BUT check out this CLING

vocaroo.com/1kTpOrS5IA7x

sounds like some transformers video game magic fart

you have no taste

It has good filters and it's one of the first MIDI synths. It was also cheap for a while into the mid-1990s because it has a shit MIDI implementation. But it has a good sound.

I have a CC knob box that I can assign different profiles and I use it with my TX81z so I have real time parameter control for 72 parameters of my choosing.

behringer's jupiter 8 clone will surely sound good enough for most people though, while it's not the same as 106 it's overall better and jupiter 8 is more expensive for a reason

Hell yeah. That sounds awesome.
I'm waiting for Behringer to fnially release that damned BCR thing they've been teasing for years.

if it’s old that means it’s good

Boobass

the p bass that comes with your daw

I have the Behringer Jupiter clone. It's nice.

i mean, i make industrial so using them on vox and drums pays dividends. but even in non industrial contexts, a subtly ringmodded vocal can add some flavor. i guess still kind of experimental though

vocaroo.com/1cRLhxusncJK
how do i sing like this without my voice cracking so much? how do people like kellin quinn do it?
I'm sitting here screaming in my room my housemates probably think i'm insane.

That style of guitar is too dependent on extended techniques and extreme dynamics to easily replicate through sampling. Metal guitar is the easiest as you basically have palm muted notes and non-palm muted notes and ideally you want all the notes of either type to sound very consistent and almost the same. Acoustic plugins can emulate some things commonly done on acoustic guitar but you couldn't emulate what it would sound like if you played an acoustic how the guitars in the tracks you linked are being played.

you just have to wait for your balls to drop

some fiddling with the stoner track from last night. im probably gonna keep working on this mix but i wont post it after this. just let me know if im on the right path

Are there small sized 3-4 octave midi keyboards, and I mean really small? The original TE OP-1 works as an amazing 2 octave midi, but it's only 2 octaves. Is there anything with around same size keys as TE OP-1 that covers more octaves?

Keystep 37 has 3 octaves.

i'm almost 30

damned BCR thing they've been teasing for years

LOL still waiting for this vapor hardware?

i meant the upcoming JT-16 flagship. the last i checked they hadn't confirmed pricing but for thousands of dollars i hope they make it accurate and not some cringe like pic related which might not even beat a plugin. if they make an accurate clone it should make juno 106 and jupiter 8 pretty much obsolete so no one in their right mind should pay $2k for a 106.

I want to make music but my sound selection is shit, I also can't program synths very well.

Should I just work with presets?

no you should stop now

how tf do i stop getting lost in the details? I play around with the automation to make it sound kinda good, or the specific song structure only for 5 hours to pass

how do I make myself ignore the details until the general structure is there and it's just finetuning after that?

You need musical ear to make music

Set an alarm to go off every 20 minutes to make you move on to something else.
Get some self discipline

that's interesting I'll try it, hanks for the tip. basically like a pomodoro except for moving on to the next problem in the song

does this mean your songs are good? that's a good problemt o have. save the midi and audition diff sounds until you find the right ones

very easy to use and fast to dial in good/classic sounds for bass, pads, and leads also basic drums. juno chorus is also legendary and still gets recreated for things like standalone plugins and effects pedals

jupiter 8 is another powerhouse synth with a lot of good, easy to reach sounds. similarly used everywhere in the 80s

Not really, I just know music theory and piano from playing for years so I find it easy to put chord progressions/melodies together I just have no idea what sounds to select and I'm not great at programming synths
I can't really copy synths from songs I like but it doesn't matter, I don't know how to get past noodling on a piano anyway

hm. so use presets. most artists don't program their own sounds. take a preset and tweak it to taste if needed

Bro has no inspiration.. Sad!

acid anon here again.
Any ideas on how to improve the break and buildup?
i feel like a cool drum sample would sound nice, and the riser sounds to sudden but not sure how to bring it in better

acid.gif - 578x388, 321.44K

holy shit turn down your percussion

I’d add more top and effect stuff personally, play with the accents,,,

Also yeah your balance is all over the place man

As was previously established, I'm absolutely shit at mixing kek Not sure how I remedy this; been a long time since I made music so I'm basically a noob with zero skill when it comes to mastering. It sounds good on my speakers but shit on other speakers

Start from 0 volume and bring it up from there

needs more high frequency squelches. this isn't even acid.

reference tracks

. It sounds good on my speakers but shit on other speakers

What speakers do you have? If you don't have a pair of decent monitors, start with that. I use Eris E5 and gets the job done.

This his how you make soulless music. Just produce without referencing. Develop your ear and and you'll establish a vibe.

retard posting

nice you should give way more feedback bro

Im leaving the actual "acid"-y synth for the drop, will probably be same as the main synth except an octave higher with more squelching and a different melody

What speakers do you have?

I switch between extremely cheap Logitech speakers and my Sony XB950N1. Sometimes AirPods too (yes, shame on me but I actually think it's important that it sounds good on generic shit)

i suck at mixing xD

I don't understand this excuse. No one is expecting a pro mix.
If you can't rough in the most basic mix, why should anyone listen to your "music"

I switch between extremely cheap Logitech speakers and my Sony XB950N1

Start with upgrading and your mixes will improve a ton. You probably have a decent ear for where you want your levels to be.

This. 90% of the music I listen to is mixed kinda cheeks. I'll hear something and think "yeah this one snare is way louder compared to the rest"
So I just don't make this mistake in my own mixes.

it’s absolutely laughable how anons itt will attempt to make music with shitty logitech speakers and expect to be able to compete with top tier industry producers with delusions about how their “songwriting” can make up for it.

The equipment you use makes or breaks a mix

I can mix better than all yall with 100 dollar headphones everything else is just cope

Only a bit. You can still make a shit mix on $10,000 equipment if your taste is bad or if your ear sucks, but you can make a fantastic mix on a $1000 setup if you're familiar with the equipment.

Meh, his mix isn't too bad. Some tracks rely on heavy percussion, especially if there's no high octave lead, also a loud snare is actually a hallmark of "old-school" techno. I actually think the issue is that there's too much syncopation going on, the synth, kick, snare, clap and hihats (or whatever that is) all have different rhythms AND they all sound too dry probably because they have barely any FX on them.
For what it's worth, the first part of the break sounds pretty good

A huge bit if you try to mix on crappy headphones or cheap logitech boxes your mix will sound all over the place

You’re deaf if you didn’t think it was awfully mixed m8

excuse

I personally think the mix in sounds fine. The mix isn't my problem, my problem is there is no top end.

It is. If you know something is bad, then fix it before showing other people.

james hypes produce a song in 20min honestly opened my eyes on how easy it is to make music if you stop trying to play by the book and just let your brain work

Laziness and/or ego protection.

Happens all the time, "I know X is bad but" and then they post one of the worst vocaroos you've ever heard because they need attention

If you don't know how to swim, then how are you supposed to know how your body can just float?

Isn't the point of this track to get feedback? You act like this is the worst thing you've ever heard on here because the clap is too loud kek

Laziness and/or ego protection.

Ironic coming from you acting all high and mighty Lmao.

Thread*

Honestly. I started a loop a month ago and got some sections set up in an hour or so.
Finally got to arranging it and it's almost done already.

You get an instructor

I have no problem with people asking for help if they note specific things they are looking to improve. It's the lazy "how's my mix guise xD" where they don't say what they're going for (reference) or clarify what they want help with

Isn't the point of this track to get feedback?

pretty much. I don't know why anon is crying about it. It's just a track that needs some mixing.

or clarify what they want help with

He literally did tho, you're being a disingenuous retard now

I have not been talking about any specific anon

Fuck this ringed up my tinnitus

I like how when it comes to providing technical comments or know how, it’s always crickets, but when it comes to how other people post…

Who is asking for technical comments?

hi i'm making an acid track

>that's not acid

i'm saving the acid for the breakdown

in general

I rarely see people ask technical questions that would require input from others

He asked what he could do to make the riser less obvious and only one anon actually addressed that

Wow, that sounded like boring ass garbage.

guess chuzo brought it up originally lmao. he loves not doing things "by the book" (he doesn't do anything at all)

"wow this professional who's been doing it for many years does it so fast!"

"that means it's so easy to do!"

"you just need to stop doing things the tried and true way and work it out yourself with your own ideas, man!"

Post a video of yourself making a song in 2 hours that's half as good as his.
I didn't even open the video and I'm willing to bet my testicles (I swear to God I will post a video of the entire scrotum being chopped in half with a cleaver) that you won't even be close.

mfw you play around with random ass filters on your on a random-ass synth and suddenly it sounds like a perfect fit

feelsgoodman.vital

here some throwaway stuff i made with my SR18 for drums, casio piano and bass. one or two of these have weird pauses, thats cause i initially played everything and recorded it on my 404 then i went into ableton and recorded the loops live. i could have just ported them over but im not planning on doing anything with these. just made them for practice. i didnt do any levels or proper mixing. i really should, also its been a while since i posted. hope everyone is doin well

why are you guys so mad lmao

dumb lil thing digging through sonic foundry stuff taking a break from the srs

i have learned cranking up the compression and treble on the cymbals makes the drums sound like early beatles recordings

Do it ten times harder and you'll be ten times better than The Beatles

i didn't feel the need to comment but since you're asking, i'm kinda resentful about james hype's success because i don't think he's really talented beyond DJing. his hit song 'ferrari' came after making hundreds of half-assed slop tracks and ferrari heavily relies on samples, he's getting the sound from having the (((connections))) to negotiate the rights to the samples rather than having the talent to produce particularly good sounds purely by himself.

Wtf? Is anyone else's audio playback distorted now on Windows? It's like it's being hard limited

what are some fool proof vocal mixing hacks?
asking for a retard

I think I fucked up my laptop's motherboard but I hope it wont affect rendering

drop it like it's hot emjoyer.

That's it, I'm going back to fucking hardware.
OneDrive and Studio One together just scrambled everything. It's all fucked. Didn't realize Studio One had been storing shit to OneDrive by default for the past 6 months.
Every single filepath is fucked. Plugin data, soundsets, samples, it's all unusable on every single project. Fuck Microsoft and fuck Presonus.

do you guys put limiters or compressors on your input tracks?

How the fuck do I decide on a genre for my artist persona?
I like so much shit, all varieties of techno, house, dnb, jungle, synthwave... I can't do it fucking all AAAAHHHH
Obviously I could just keep jumping around but I feel like I need to dive deeper into one of those to actually git gud at it

What makes the most money

1. Just do all of them. Tipper for example has wildly different albums.
2. Make different stuff under different names.
3. Do that one thing but better like you said

1. Just do all of them. Tipper for example has wildly different albums.

Sure, but not out of the box, dude has like a career spanning almost three decades, obviously you can try out different stuff with time ranges like these. And yes I do want to make an album that is basically a love letter to each genre at some point, but it's more like a one-off.

2. Make different stuff under different names.

Way more effort for zero gain. Every time I see an artist doing this it feels retarded kek. Also this doesn't solve my original problem of not being good enough or not having enough time in the specific genre

3. Do that one thing but better like you said

Yes, but WHICH ONE?

Yes, but WHICH ONE?

How is this even a question?
If there's such little difference between the options to make it hard to choose, then the money/career variable becomes the differentiating factor.
If you don't want to make money and just want to have fun, think of what "getting into" each genre entails and choose the most fun one.
Same for getting pussy, personal fulfillment, etc.

If there's such little difference between the options to make it hard to choose,

It's hard to choose because they're all fun to me, not because they're similar (they're really not and sometimes even require vastly different production approaches).

then the money/career variable becomes the differentiating factor.

Not really a factor for me

If you don't want to make money and just want to have fun

I don't, I already have a fairly decent career and don't really need to get famous with my music or anything. Would be nice obviously, but if money was the primary factor I'd probably do some hyper mainstream house music which just feels too empty at the end of the day because I know I'm doing it for the money

think of what "getting into" each genre entails and choose the most fun one.

I guess that's what I'm currently trying to do, let's see where it goes. Maybe somebody can share their experiences, if you've been in a similar situation?

vocaroo.com/1fz0s6gRHnvE
why do my mixes always sound like shit? what am i doing wrong

It's hard to choose because they're all fun to me, not because they're similar (they're really not and sometimes even require vastly different production approaches).

I didn't say the genres are similar musically. I said "difference between the options", meaning that any one of them is about equally ok for you.

Not really a factor for me

If you don't care about success, just make all of them. Who cares if you're not super good at any of them like you would be if you focused on just one?
To me this sounds like "I like a lot of different types of videogame; which esport should I get into? (I don't want to actually make it a job, I play games for fun)".

If getting as good as possible in at least one genre is important to you, then ask yourself why and choose the genre that helps you achieve that the best.
For example, if it's a point of pride, choose a difficult genre to make.
If it's to impress certain people (your friends, girls, your dad, etc), pick the genre that they like or would think is impressive.
Etc.

There are many factors that only you know about. Lay down all the characteristics of each option, and also your goals and general situation, then try to find the option that aligns with it the best.

But I still recommend making different genres (even if you pick a main one, at least make them on the side every once in a while). As you said, they involve vastly different production approaches, so what you learn in each of them will make you an overall better and more unique producer, which will translate to all of them.
Or you could just make one genre, but incorporate your favourite elements of those other ones to create interesting blends (and it can be fun trying to make bad pairings work).

make ALL the genres

*2010 meme imitation*

Im not mad, but after waiting 20 minutes the end result was really bad. Nobody can honestly think that is a good song he made.
He spent more time looking for sounds than actually creating interesting music using rhythm and structure.

He spent more time looking for sounds

Sound design is more fun than making "actual music."
Can someone explain to me why I should pick samples and presets over dicking around with just making neat sounds?

In a song tender by blur the verse goes A G A and chorus goes A D C A C#m D
Its in the key of A.
Chords C and G arent in the key of A, yet they work. Whats the theory behind this?

yes, they're borrowed chords but i find it easiest to think of them as their roman numeral function

the G would be bVII which is extremely common in blues and rock, also part of the backdoor 2-5-1
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Backdoor_progression

C is the bVII of D, but it's mainly functioning there as the bIII of A, which is a chromatic mediant and gives that weird sound when it resolves to A. chromatic mediants are when you move by a third to a chord in another key which gives a strange non-diatonic sound. radiohead creep uses this when it goes from I to bIII. you can use chromatic mediants to modulate to a different key or just make a progression feel slightly off
youtu.be/ouyRJSt_dM8?t=43

you can just look at the parallel major/minor keys and take chords from there but guitarists aren't thinking that when they're moving shapes on guitar

meant to say creep goes from I to III, three major instead of three minor
