Okay. Fine. What's some good new music that's not awfully way too experimental and NOT pop?
No, this is not a bait thread. I WILL listen to it and I WILL give feedback on it.

Being Dead. A rock band from Austin
Sounds great. I love the not over-produced feel of the song, I'll be checking out the album. It kinda reminds me of the Pixies or The Flaming Lips.
Clarissa Connelly. Art pop girl from Copenhagen.
Not my thing. Way too artsy, it just goes on way too long for me and sounds very repetitive. I do love a lot of art songs (Swans, Nine Inch Nails' early instrumentals), but this one just isn't it.
Fievel is Glauque. Jazz pop band wi the members from NY and Belgium.
I'd like the song if it was just a one-off from an album surrounded by less happy sounding music. But I don't think I could take any more than one song of this. It's very happy and groovy, but not my thing. The music video was cool though, and I liked the end portion of it.
I'll be checking out the rest of "Being Dead", thanks anon.

I like Slift, this is the title track from their newest album.
Slift Ilion
Good stuff. I sorta like it, the reverb is nice. I like the drums, the guitar, and the subtle electronic sound. It's really long and drawn out though, I'll listen to it a few times over the week and see if the song/album grows on me.
I don't know why, but I get the feeling the band is a nazi band. Hopefully not.
They are French. France has a ban on Nazi shit.

This was the title track from the previous album.
Much better. I like it a lot more. In fact it's almost right up my alley. Thanks anon, I'll check Slift out.
You are welcome. This is a bit of a change in pace, but you might like this too:

It is from 2019, a new album from this band will be out sometime this year.
Might as well dump some other stuff, most from people who have been in the scene for a while:

People might call me a boomer, but this sort of music does not really have an age to it.
I will post more for you, OP, if you want.
Sounds really good. It's kinda to the point where it feels like a bootleg of AC/DC, but it's an extremely welcome sound to me. I'll check out their new album when it comes out!
Blue Oyster Cult - That was me
Yeah, a bit too dadrocky for me. I can see why people would like it though.
Vain - You better keep an eye on that girl
Same issue as last song.
Ace Frehley - 10,000 volts
Too poppy for me. Also dad rock-ish
D-A-D - Speed of Darkness
This kinda reminds me of the early 2000's edgy songs mixed with dadrock. It's almost good in a "What the fuck is this combination" way.
Trial by fire
It reminds me of DragonForce kinda, sadly I never liked DragonForce.
I can understand why you like these OP, it's taste I can tolerate. I just like stuff that's a little more nuanced than it. So fucking glad to hear guitar solos come back though, I've been missing those for a while.
AC/DC and Motorhead are their main influences.
Ace Frehley
I expected so much, he was Kiss's old guitarist.
I hear you. I tend to pivot towards Dad Rock, but unfortunately, most of the new stuff is either that or Nu-[insert band here] like the Judas Priest song I shared.
I know it is not knew and is the band's only good album, but check out Lucifer's Friend (1971). It might be a bit on the experimental side (track below contains a French horn, but it works very well), but it sounds quite a bit like Led Zeppelin at times, (album came out the same year as IV). youtube.com

I am guessing you want a lot of space rock, psychedelic rock and possibly doom and stoner metal. Let me know what you think.
good new music

Both sound amazing, I can't believe the first one was released last month! I'll check out those bands.
Too poppy/jazzy for me. I also don't like the weird usage of tv clips in it. It kind of reminds me of the stupid youtuber music videos made by Schmoyoho where it was just edits of them saying stuff
I love her voice. the backing beat and bass sounds extremely generic. Almost like I could find this type of music anywhere else. Hopefully she goes onto better and more impactful bands.
Just look up the genres I mentioned and take your picks. A lot of the bands with this sort of sound are European. Airbourne more or less sums up the "Australian sound" of rock, though there is a bit more variety than that.
I struggle to find American bands of this sort, which as an American, pisses me off, but hey, I will find what I want eventually.
Earthless is known for longer tracks, so a lot of 15-20 minute pieces.
La Femme - Love Is Over
The visuals are really great. Someone must've made good money by animating all of that. I don't like the poppiness of it though. This is the type of song where I imagine how good it'd sound if it went in different directions.
Personally, I think the guy should stop singing, the girl's voice is much more appealing to listen to. But, it's not my type of music anymore so I'm not one to talk.
Also, the "Loooooove is overrrrrr" is very annoying to listen to.
La Femme - Clover Paradise
Much better. I feel like these guys could do better if they stopped doing pop. The use of ambience, noises, and effects are extremely skillful.
If they poured this effort into rock, they could bring back an industrial resurgence.
Again though, too synth poppy for me. I like the melodies used.
Though, great fucking sax and guitar solos. I also love the quieter part around the 3 minute mark. They should REALLY just get into rock.
La Femme - Amazing
Same issues as last time. I like the backing more than the vocals this time. Though, the sax solo is kind of ear piercing.
A lot of the bands with this sort of sound are European
Maybe music is finally restarting, modern rock and roll was transported from Europe to America. Hopefully another payload hits and all the great bands that were recommended here can blow up
Slift has already blown up. Ilion was the 33rd most popular album in the UK at one point last year. Pretty sure Ummon was number one for rock in France and Belgium for a few weeks too.
These guys are huge in Australia right now
youtube.com
Currently relisting to "Slift - Ummon", it's an earworm. The sound is abrasive and sticks to your ears. Great rec, anon.
Rum Jungle - What's it like
Sorry anon, this music is just not my thing. I'm sure you like it, so I'm not going to riff on it.
Pretty sure Ummon was number one for rock in France and Belgium for a few weeks too
So Rock ISNT dead. It's just that America is fucking drenched in popslop
Holy shit
thanks for checking them out. the band experiments with loads of genres so probably has stuff you might like in the older albums, if you ever check em out again.
Thank you. By the way, if you are interested in the album art (what made me start listening to Slift in the first place), then I will tell you that the guy who did it is a comic artist who goes by Caza, apparently, he is popular in France. His work makes for some good wallpapers for the computer.
Yes, but every country has a different timeline for music. For example, if I ask a Russian where rock peaked, he would say the 1990s or early-mid 2000s, whereas an American would probably say the 1960s or 1970s. It is a matter of culture and what sticks. America is drowned by every other genre and not rock quite simply because of who listens to rock (and quite a bit of metal) and what they want. It is the reason why a lot of the American bands I have posted are a bit dad rock-like, nothing bad about them, in fact, better than a lot of music out there, but nothing notable. Even then, established, fairly well-known acts rarely get attention from their new songs because of the radio stations and the likes of Spotify. YouTube and Bandcamp are the two best places to find good stuff, but also college radio stations and foreign language stations are pretty good. I listen to a Russian radio station from time to time and use Shazam to help me find what I like. I do the same with Polish, French, Greek, Turkish, Swedish, Finnish and Norwegian music.
This song played on Russian radio today:

Slight tangent, but also Canada is pretty drowned out too, since aside from the most recent Sum 41 album, there really has not been anything notable. That Sum 41 album is mostly notable for being their last, but the intent was to do a pop punk vs metal production with each record being separated across different records. It is called Heaven :x: Hell, if you are interested, though I do not think it would be your thing as it is a little bit on the pop side of things, though maybe a song or two on Hell could appeal to you.
That's a really cool bit of history. I'll try and find some college radio stations, I remember people saying that in the past it was the best way to find newer music.
Sad to hear about Canada though. Rock music is some of the most pure music I've ever heard. So many different sounds can be made from it. It's sad to see some of the largest countries are the ones without it
Unfortunately, it seems that way. I think that the 1980s marked the death as once the 1990s started, there were three camps that hated one another: punk, metal and grunge, with alt rock starting to emerge slightly later and eventually taking the place of grunge. From there, metal fractionalized and punk further split between traditional punk and pop punk. Older generation rock still existed as it does today, but it has been the same story since the 1990s, older bands are rarely resurgent.
In a sense, I want everything to come together, but at the same time not have everything sound the same. In a word, for rock to become popular again, somebody must come along and pick up a number of bits and pieces and fit them together. Rock is like a tangram puzzle, many, distinct uniform pieces that can be assembled in any number of appealing ways.
If this does not make any sense (which is because I am tired), think about jazz, it died after the War and did not return until the 1970s with fusion.
We need "fusion rock".
In a sense, Slift is that, as it brings hard rock, space rock, heavy metal, some speed metal, plus epic doom and stoner metal into their work. They probably do not realize it, as good bands tend to have a certain set of inspirations, rather than models. It is hard for me to tell you the difference, but I believe that it has to do with the final product having its own sound. It can be close, but so long as it is not exactly the same as somebody else that is well-known, then you have the makings of a good band.
Originality is the key to success, but creativity does not exist in a vacuum either.
Some interesting acts have had their time in the 1990s and afterwards. Take Apocalyptica, for example, they used string instruments and more or less created symphonic metal.

(Somebody called this music Reddit a while back, but I think it is pretty good, plus I adore orchestral instruments used in metal and rock).
Originality is the key to success, but creativity does not exist in a vacuum either.
Hard ass fucking line. Golden. Hopefully one day Fusion Rock gets big and it can come back as a whole once more.
Amen brother.
Try Chosic, by the way, it helps find stuff that you want. It is an AI tool, however and it is limited to Spotify, but it is pretty good given its limitations. I just found another half dozen bands from it (Somali Yacht Club, Black Rainbows, Lowrider, Kryptograf, Greenleaf and Elephant Tree). I have not heard any of them, so take it with a grain of salt, but I like what I have heard so far.
This song is a longer one, but it is worth every minute: youtube.com
Another Slift track, by the way.
That was my first reaction.
I've been a huge fan of Geese since their last record, also a fan of their vocalist's solo album:

Going back to this post, the more I think that Greta van Fleet fits the bill, but they originally were a Led Zeppelin copycat, but got a bit of their own flare later.
That said, they are a pretty basic tier rock band that just about everybody knows, it seems. Probably the most mainstream "good" music out there.
I WILL listen to it and I WILL give feedback on it.
just listen to it and then take your feedback and loop it right up your ass.
not OP but I'm listening to Being Dead and I'm enjoying it, it's
fun
Why the sudden hate?
sudden?
Never heard of them, sounds like an uninspired Sticky Fingers spinoff
