not really, it was a pretty widely enjoyed genre/subculture at the time. there was certainly a "how embarrassing" narrative driven by snobby hipster types on the coasts who associated it with dumb blue collar red state white guys but normal people didn't have that baggage
If you liked the heavier variety (Korn/Slipknot) you were probably a 'weird kid' wearing bondage pants and makeup.
Histrionic buttrock like Three Days Grace and Papa Roach was big with girls prone to self-harm.
Bands like LP/LB with a more pronounced pop/rap element were popular with most people.
