what makes them 'Grunge'? They weren't from that scene and barely knew the Seattle Grunge players. They didn't gravitate towards Metal and Hard Rock like the Seattle bands but instead took almost exclusively from Noise Rock and Post-Hardcore. Their only Seattle influence would be the garage punk of Mudhoney. Apart from that there are no Seattle bands in Kurt's top 50. Zero Metal too. And afaik they lived in Olympia, not Seattle until very late. If Nirvana are Grunge you might as well lump all the Olympia bands like Bikini Kill and Unwound into 'Grunge'.

Baby's first band

they just were

They were grunge because they were. Stop being autistic.

Screaming Trees and Mark Lanegan >>>>> all other Seattle bands from that era

This

They aren't grunge, they are post-grunge, as they started up outside the scene after Soundgarden's independent era and their debut album missed the cutoff after which Soundgarden signed to a major label, the cutoff point between grunge and bands trying to copy them
They are only gifted the term grunge instead of post-grunge because they broke out in the mainstream after corporate support, but they are definite post-grunge in era and style.

BASED

Unironically tho, Mark was so freakin cool and so freakin good.

The distortion

I'm in one hundred percent agreement. Underrated as fuck. His albums have aged really well

Am I schizo or did the yellow screaming trees album influence the britpop/oasis sound

I think there was a soundgarden album on one of his lists

This was my very first pedal

Not a britpop enthusiast but I wouldn't be surprised.

Yeah, I never understood why Nirvana were considered "Grunge", either.
Their roots were in punk and hardcore, not hard rock or heavy metal.

noise isnt music

It feels like it's Grunge because it's Rock with some Sludge on it. Because a lot of what were called Grunge Bands sound like they'd play with the Melvins but they didn't get as Sludge-y as them.

Music is literally noise.

Why is the sound of grunge so hard for people to understand? The sound of grunge is sludge/punk/alternative rock mix. This Nirvana song is a perfect example of what grunge is.

It can also be a bit faster like youtube.com/watch?v=jm3UwFTBNys

That is grunge, that style of music (a lot of distortion too)

Nope. Nobody else in seattle sounded that way

this thread i swear

They weren't from that scene and barely knew the Seattle Grunge players

they were indeed from that scene
they knew mudhoney tad and soundgarden among the othersif that's enough for you
grunge was influenced by punk metal and other stuff and you get to hear plenty of that in their records
the fuck have you listened to
ultimately they became huge exposing the scene to the world by becoming the major representation of it
wtf

Nirvana weren’t from that scene. They don’t sound like Metal at all. One single song that sounds like Melvins doesn’t change that.

And none of the bands sounded the same on major labels as they did on sub pop. Bleach clearly had a heavy metal influence and sounded exactly like every other sub pop seattle band

Nirvana were from the LA glam scene
they were not from the state of WA
the bands from that scene would play fucking metal
Nirvana played synth-wave-pop-glam

One single song that sounds like Melvins doesn’t change that.

Buzzo (melvins) was Kurts best friend in high school and taught him alot. Kurt wanted to be in the Melvins

they were friends with the melvins and mudhoney in the early days + they were influenced by bands like uhhhhh flipper wipers jesus lizard etc like noisy edgy punk bands but they were also a very pop band too so like yeah mainstream rock influenced by 80s edgy bands thats grunge

Nirvana were outsiders. They didn't seem to care much about the seattle scene.

I don't understand marketing, I believe idiotic micro-genre labelling is super-important

find a more constructive hobby, bud

They weren't from that scene and barely knew the Seattle Grunge players.

Huh? They were all at the same concerts and the same parties. Van Conner (Screaming Trees.) first heard Smells Like Teen Spirit at a party at Dan Peters' (Mudhoney) house on a tape brought by Krist Novoselic and Kurt Cobain.

School is maybe the most emblematic grunge song
If you want to hear the definition of the "Seattle sound", School is it

Have you ever listened to Bleach before?

OP meant to post this, sorry

Skin Yard, Melvins, U-Men?

Grunge is just hardcore punk slowed down to 70s rock speed

Are you retarded? Green River was literally the first grunge band.

Nirvana is a type of metal

Fart Cobain lol
