All the 90s bands I care the most about have standout guitarists. Jane's, Pumpkins, AIC... I guess White and Rob Zombie too.
Ritchie Blackmore is a guitarist’s favourite guitarist. He is respected for his improvisational capabilities as well as his technical virtuosity. Because of this, his market of respect is limited to dedicated guitarists, as you need to understand the guitar specifically to register what he’s doing.
On the other hand, Jonny Greenwood earns his respect not for technical guitair virtuosity, but for his capablility to seamlessly interweave the guitar within the wider ensemble, not always as a standout instrument, but as a sonic enhancement, primarily. Because of this he can pull in attention from a more diverse range of listeners / musicians, as he plays the guitar in such a way where he can clearly communicate with the other instrumentalists. (hopefully that didn’t sound pretentious)
Basically I think the problem is two entirely different approaches to the guitar are attempting to be rated with the same criteria, when that simply wouldn’t work.

Do you even just jam with your friends? Are you Mr. Perfect? You're bound to fuck up.
